Entrance Antiphon

All that you have done to us, O Lord, you have done with true judgement, for we have sinned against you and not obeyed your commandments. But give glory to your name and deal with us according to the bounty of your mercy.

Responsorial Psalm Psalm 19
The precepts of the Lord are right; they gladden the heart.
The law of the Lord is perfect;
it revives the soul.
The decrees of the Lord are steadfast;
they give wisdom to the simple.
The fear of the Lord is pure,
abiding forever.
The judgements of the Lord are true;
They are, all of them, just.
So in them your servant finds instruction;
great reward is in their keeping.
But who can detect their own errors?
From hidden faults acquit me.
From presumption restrain your servant;
may it not rule me.
Then shall I be blameless,
Clean from grave sin.
The precepts of the Lord are right; they gladden the heart. /

Gospel Acclamation

Alleluia, alleluia.

Your word, O Lord, is truth; sanctify us in the truth. Alleluia

Communion Antiphon

Remember your word to your servant, O Lord, by which you have given me hope. This is my comfort when I am brought low.

Unlocking the Mystery of the Bible!

Unlocking the Mystery of the Bible helps you uncover the story woven through scripture with its clever narrative approach and ingenious color-coded Bible Timeline. It is a great way to get the “big picture” of the Bible and see how our Catholic Faith is rooted in scripture. You’ll see how the Bible reveals God’s loving plan for your life, and you will learn helpful ways to put your faith into practice.

The study includes a series of 8 informative and engaging half-hour videos presented by Jeff Cavins. We will be viewing them over 4 week.For more information – contact Mark 082 873 4661 or

SEPTEMBER – MONTH OF THE HOLY CROSS

During the month of September, the Church celebrates the Exultation or Triumph of the Holy Cross. To commemorate this month I would like to suggest the following:

1.  Be mindful and deliberate when making the Sign of the Cross - the Great sign of our Faith and the sign of God's Love for us.

2.  Have a crucifix displayed in your home - in a prominent place.

3.  Teach a child how to make the Sign of the Cross: from forehead to belly button, shoulder to shoulder - a nice big Sign of the Cross shows how much we love God.

4.  Begin each day with the Sign of the Cross and end each day with the Sign of the Cross.

5.  Take time to look at the Cross and give thanks for the greatest love of all made real by Jesus on the Cross.

6.  Ask Jesus to help you to imitate his self-sacrificing love as you take up your cross each day to follow him.

Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Year B
27th September 2015 Richard Lyng, O.S.A
Commentary
First Reading (Num 11:25-29)
The Book of Numbers is a priestly work, framed as an historical narrative, in which the central question is: how do a people on the march maintain a system of fitting worship and cultic purity? Today’s brief extract follows upon a particularly difficult time when the marching people have exasperated Moses with their complaining tears. Yahweh, when approached, instructs a distressed Moses to ‘co-opt seventy elders to help with the difficult task of leadership. Eldad and Medad, although summoned with the others, did not come to the assembly at the Tent of Meetings. But they too received the spirit, although from outside the recognised institutional channels. This suggests that prophecy must remain beyond the control of the priestly caste.
This principle is safeguarded through the ‘unorthodox’ induction of Eldad and Medad.
Second Reading (Jam 5:1-6)
The primary concern of the brief Letter of James is right living rather than the Good News of salvation. The author’s concern for the poor leads to his unrelieved assault upon the rich and their indifference to the poor. Injustice is the by-product of greed and avarice. The poor are the ultimate victims. But the rich shall not escape. Corrosion alone will be their lot, echoing Matthew 19-21. There is no evangelical call for ‘a change of heart’ here, no invitation to repentance. In short, he is warning his fellow Christians that, if they live like the pagans, corrosion will be their destiny too.
Gospel (Mk 9:38-43,45.47-48)
The context is Jesus on the road to Jerusalem and the Cross, and instructing his disciples as they walk along the Way.
Like Eldad and Medad, of the First Reading, the anonymous exorcist of Mark didn’t belong to the inner circle. In both instances, the ‘good works’ of the outsiders provoke jealousy. The response of Jesus follows closely the response of Moses. Jealousy in the face of God’s generosity is an entirely inappropriate response. God’s gifts are not diminished through distribution.
The term ‘little ones’ must not be taken as applying exclusively to ‘children’. ‘Those who are vulnerable’ may be a more faithful rendition of the original. The ‘great millstone’ of v.42 is the large mulos onikos, a donkey-powered millstone, not the smaller hand-operated one. Jesus is using hyperbole to dramatise the danger of causing injury to the faith of the ‘little ones.’
This section may be best understood in a context of persecution and imminent danger. Then the mutilation analogies will work either literally of metaphorically. In a literal sense, bodily mutilation is preferable to loss of faith. Metaphorically, the Christian community may be understood as a human body in the Pauline sense. Those members who betray and offend should be cut off from the rest of the body, sacrificed for the greater good.
