VERY GRATEFUL THANKS: to Dr Judy Blezzard and to all who supported last Sunday’s Carols and Cribs event followed by a grand afternoon tea. Including the reclaimable Gift Aid element, just short of £400 was raised for Bridging the Gap.

SPECIAL GOOD WISHES: go today to Dr Christopher Johns, a loyal member of St Peter’s Singers and a great supporter of the Parish Church Choir, who is this afternoon being installed as Director of Music at Leicester Cathedral. The Rector, the Master of the Music and adult members of the Parish Church Choral Foundation are travelling to Leicester by coach after this morning’s Choral Eucharist to support Dr Johns today.

THE ORGAN – ITS MUSIC AND ITS FUTURE: All are warmly welcome to attend the upcoming meeting of Leeds Organists’ Association on Saturday afternoon this week, 5 February at LidgettParkMethodistChurch, Roundhay – just over the road from St Edmund’s. Dr Lindley leads a discussion on the organ and its future.

EARLY YEARS TOYS in good condition are wanted, please, to resource the informal “crèche” area in the City of Leeds Room for our 10.30 a.m. Sunday services.

STEWARDSHIP THANKSGIVING WEEKEND: On Saturday 12 February, there will be a chain of prayer from 9.30 am to 11.30 am in the quiet chapel to give thanks for what has so far been achieved in our financial turn-around and to pray for further progress to be maintained. On Sunday 13 February, there will be a shared lunch at which the Diocesan Stewardship Advisor, Paul Winstanley, and our Parish Treasurer, Trevor Parker, will provide a presentation and update; please sign the list in Church if you’re intending to be present at the Lunch. The preacher at 6.30 pm Choral Evensong that day will be the Venerable Peter Burrows, Archdeacon of Leeds, who will speak to the Stewardship Thanksgiving theme. Please sign up for one of the half-hour slots for the Chain of Prayer.

PANCAKE RACES: A date for your diaries! Shrove Tuesday this year being during School Term rather than the Half Term Break, there will on 8 March at 2.00 pm in the Parish Church Precincts be Pancake Races. All are most warmly welcome to attend and there will be teams from the Choristers, members of JuniorChurch and Pupils of St Peter’s Church of England Primary School. Please put the date in your diary now.

PARISH TRIP TO IONA 18-22 October 2011: There are three places remaining on the parish trip to Iona later this year. The cost is £200 plus travel; accommodation is in shared rooms in Bishop's House, the episcopal retreat house on the Island. FOCUSON . . .CANDLEMAS

The Feast of the Presentation of Christ in the Temple, known as Candlemas, has been described as “one last look back at Christmas, and now turn towards the Cross”. The observance of Candlemas may therefore be said to have a bitter-sweet quality. There are present in the festival lingering echoes of the joy, the sweetness and light, of the Christmas festivities as the Epiphany season draws to a close. But there are strong hints, too, of the sadness and sorrow of events yet to unfold which we will consider in depth in the course of Lent, Holy Week and Easter as we reflect on the great meta-narrative of our salvation in Christ.

Present in the Candlemas Liturgy, then, is this dichotomy of the human condition of both the “highs” and the “lows” of daily experience. In this mortal life, though we do indeed see glimpses of the divine glory along the way, but for the moment we are bidden to take up our Cross and follow the one who was tested as we are. So, for the time being, we keep to the road, following in the steps of our Lord and Master, bearing our own Cross with courage and fortitude, and with constant faith in him who carries the greater weight of our burden himself.

May we trust him both to lead us and to walk with us on our pilgrim journey, through sorrow and through joy, until we enter into the fullness of his light and share ever more deeply in the promise of the great wonders of his glory!

Tony Bundock
