Today’s Scripture Reading.

Most of us are regularly whipping out our mobile phones, checking voice-mail, texting and talking. Today’s Readings invite us to enter into spaces of silence, where it is easier to hear the one who is constantly communicating divine love to us.

In the 1st Reading, Elijah is in a bad way; he had to escape into the desert where he plopped himself under a tree and asked God to let him die. Twice the angel has to encourage him to eat and drink. He eventually does so and is thereby fortified for his 40-day trek to Horeh where in ‘a sound of sheer-silence’ Elijah hears the voice of God. Note the probing question that invites Elijah and us to reflect on whether our actions and choices are leading us to fulfil our deepest desires to be close with God and his purposes.

In the Gospel Jesus tries to retreat to pray. People search for Him; the disciples are in trouble in their boat on the lake. He goes to them in the fourth watch - - - shares with them his gift of fearlessness. When they grasp his outstretched hand, inviting them to come to Him, they find in Him the rock solid centre where his infectious courage scatters all fear.

The Church of Sinners:
When I was young, I did not understand why, in spite of Peter’s denial, Jesus still wanted him to be the head of the Church, his successor, the first Pope. Now I am no longer surprised. I have gradually come to understand that the founding of the Church on the tomb of a traitor, a person terrified by a servant-girl’s chatter, is a permanent warning to each to us to stay humble and aware of our own frailty. / No, I shall not leave this Church, founded on so frail a rock, because I should be founding another one on an even frailer rock; myself - - -
What matters is Christ’s promise: the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit alone can build the Church with stones as ill-hewn as we! The Holy Spirit alone can hold us together, keep us one in spite of ourselves, in spite of the ‘wayward’ force with which our boundless pride endows us.
