Today’s Scripture:
In today’s Gospel, Jesus not only encourages his disciples to have untroubled hearts but helps them know how to find the way there. The setting is the Last Supper, and the disciples have plenty of reasons to be distressed. Jesus has been speaking of going away and of being handed over and of being denied by two of his closest friends. The disciples were confused and anxious. Where is he going and how can they know the way to be with Him? / ·  “Where” does not refer to a geographical space but to inner communion with Jesus, which rests on belief in God and belief in Him. Jesus wants for his followers the same kind of companionship that he enjoys with the Father.
·  The dwelling place that he speaks about is a deep friendship with Himself that is both a present reality and a continuously deepening happening that will mature in the fullness of time.
·  We know the way into the untroubled heart of God, and we have ‘seen’ the fullness of God in Jesus.
Believing and following Him, even in the roughest situation, our hearts can be “stilled and quieted - - - like a weaned child on its mother’s breast” (Psalm 131.2)

‘Mother and Child’ Drawing at Templenoe Church: This is a pencil-drawing of religious art by the renowned religious-artist, Imogen Stuart. The picture, donated in memory of Margaret O’Shea, (Greenane) will be placed on the back-wall of the church.

Vocations to Priesthood and Consecrated life:
all Catholics can…
§  Pray for an increase in vocations - - - beg the master of the harvest to send labourers into the vineyard. If we want more priests, religious sisters and brothers, we all need to ask.
§  Teach children and young people how to pray. Unless we teach them to pray they will never hear God calling them into a deeper friendship with Him and into the life of the Church.
§  Encourage - - - do a bit of positive reinforcement about the value of priesthood and the consecrated life - - - invite young people to keep the idea of a vocation on their radar.
§  Create a ‘vocation culture’ in the way we pray, talk and live in the parish. / It is up to the priests and religious brothers and sisters to make ‘vocation’ attractive by living out their own vocation properly, faithfully, courageously, enthusiastically, humbly; but the rest of us can make it attractive by giving them a ‘fair wind’ in the way we talk about them. May God’s voice find a response in each of our hearts.
‘Of Gods and Men’ is a ‘religious’ film. It tells the true story of a small community of eight Cistercian Trappist Monks from the monastery of Our Lady of Atlas, Tibhirine, Algeria. The monks have lived peacefully with the Muslim Community for many years until an extremist Islamist group threatens all foreigners. The monks are advised to leave or accept military protection. They refuse both. They were murdered in May 1996.
The film focussed, not on the murder of the monks, but on their lives. It shows the humanity of these men, their doubts and their fears. The film is sprinkled with the rituals of the Church, with chanting and prayer and with several discussions on what it means to follow Christ. It offers an understanding of the passion and death of Jesus in contemporary form.
It is a gripping examination of faith, a graphic description of religious passion. It is a powerful depiction of what Eucharistic living is. It is available on D.V.D.
