JULY 3, 2016 FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

FROM FR. DAN’S DESK…

My friends, on this Independence Day Weekend, in addition to the wonderful, relaxing time with family and friends that this weekend provides, I hope we can all take a moment to reflect on the gift and blessing that “Independence” offers us as individuals and as a nation! All we need to do is see images of refugees fleeing countries where such independence is not offered, to realize that we are greatly blessed!

This weekend, I want to welcome Fr. Philip Parent, SM, from the Marist Missions who will celebrate and preach at all our Masses this weekend as part of a Mission Appeal. Each year, through the Society of the Propagation of the Faith, our Diocese assigns us a missionary group to come and share the story of their work around the world and to take up a second collection for the group. I know you will welcome Fr. Parent warmly, and be generous in the “Second Collection” which will follow immediately after our Offertory Collection this weekend. Thank You!

I just wanted to send along special thanks from Sr. Mary and the Franciscan Missionary Sisters of Assisi, for your generous support of their August Calendar Raffle. They sold 160 tickets here in the parish last weekend. Sr. Mary tells me that historically we have always sold the most tickets in our parish, and consequently we have the most winners! So good luck to everyone, and know your support of the sisters here in the Diocese is greatly appreciated!

I saw Sr. Mary a lot last Sunday – at all of our Masses selling the Raffle Tickets, and all afternoon at the wonderful 40th Celebration of Priesthood for a Franciscan priest and friend! Fr. Noel Danielewicz, OFM Conv. was my Pastor when I served my apostolic year of formation with the Franciscans, teaching 7th Grade at St. Francis of Assisi church in Bessemer, Alabama in 1991-92! I am blessed that my “Franciscan family” continues to welcome me for celebrations and milestones in their lives. The Mass for Fr. Noel was held at Our Lady of Angels Chapel at the Felician Sisters Convent in Enfield, CT. I was happy that Fr. Noel invited me along with his Franciscan brothers to celebrate his Jubilee Mass!

I was saddened to attend recently the funeral of Sr. Mary Cadigan, SSJ, who passed away due to injuries sustained in a car accident. Sr. Mary was a wonderful Sister of St. Joseph and a nurse for 43 years at the Mont Marie Healthcare Center where my mom resides. Recently she had been serving as a Eucharistic Minister to the residents there. Sr. Mary was a fellow native of Holyoke, and we wish her family, friends and sisters, consolation and peace.

As the weeks of Summer roll by, you will be seeing some long-awaited “Work Projects” being done in the church. The Summer is a great time for us to get some projects done that we have been waiting to do. The wallpaper in the corners of the church will be stripped and replacement wallpaper will be put up – I will be happy to see the ripples in the old wallpaper disappear! And we will also be installing our “Projection System” that we raised money for a few years back through a coffee can collection. I held off on this projection project because I just wasn’t comfortable with what we had planned in terms of how the system would have to be set up. Sometimes it’s good to wait – technology changes and improvements are made. Instead of a “projection” system, we will be using two 78” LED TV’s which will be brighter and clearer, and replace the need for projectors mounted to the ceiling of the church. Our thanks to Andy and Sean Hogan (our parishioner) from Hogan Technologies, for making this great proposal. It will involve some reconstruction of the short walls on either side of the Altar which will house the TV’s on a “lift”, so that when they are not in use, the TV’s will not be visible and will “recess” into those short walls! Pretty great technology! I know it will be a great addition for our once a month Sunday Night Masses, as well as other occasions like our Lenten Series, etc.!

And the good news is that the Coffee Can Collection – “Pro-Ject” Success” we did a few years ago, raised almost all of what we need to pay for this system. Having a “coffee can collection” – saving spare change – has helped us with many projects in the parish including our Steeple on the church, our Veteran’s Memorial Garden, our Rectory Renovation, and now our Projection System in the church. Thank you all for saving your spare change, and please keep doing so – the next coffee can collection may be right around the corner!!!

I recently had a nice visit with our former Pastor - Fr. Francis X. Sullivan at the Marian Center in Holyoke. He is doing ok, but has slowed down a great deal. Please keep him in your prayers and consider sending him a card with good wishes at: Marian Center - 1700 Northampton Street, Holyoke, MA 01040.

Ursula and John Touhey’s son Fr. John Tuohey – a native of our Parish - will celebrate his 35th Anniversary of Priesthood Ordination on July 11. Ursula and John ask that if anyone would like to send Fr. John a card of congratulations, you can send a card to Fr. John Tuohey - 2064 N. W. Village Circle, Portland, OR 97229.

God Bless! Fr. Dan

OF THE MARIST MISSIONS

Since its official recognition by the Church in 1836, the Society of Mary (Marist Fathers and Brothers) has committed itself to the missions in the southwestern Pacific. Since that time, the Marists have expanded into areas in Africa, Asia and South America. Today there are nearly 230 priests and brothers working in “bush stations”, teaching in schools and seminaries, ministering in training institutions, providing direct service to the poor, oppressed and marginalized, and contributing to the development of people for a better society and a strong local Church. Contributions to the Marists will help them in their mission of witness to the Gospel, service to the needy and helping the local Church to build a strong base for its promising future. Thank you for whatever you can do to help them in their life-long commitment and work.

OUR STEWARDSHIP

June 19, 2016

Regular and Development (gold) $ 9,135

THANK YOU!

ADORATION

Adoration will be held on Thursday, July 7, beginning after the 7:00AM Service and ending at 8:00PM. The month of July is dedicated to the Precious Blood. Pope Pius IX extended to the whole Church the Feast of the Precious Blood. Like the Sacred Wounds of Jesus, His Precious Blood deserves special honor because of its close relation to the Sacred Passion. That honor was given to it from the beginning by the Apostles who praised its redeeming power. (Romans 5:9) “…we are justified by His blood…”

Eternal Father, I offer You the merits of the Precious Blood of Jesus, Your beloved Son, my Savior and my God, for all my relations, friends and enemies, for those in need, in sickness and in tribulation, and for all those whom You know that I am bound to pray, and will that I should pray. Glory be to the Father.... Blessed and praised for evermore be Jesus, Who has saved us with this Blood!

From the Seven Offerings of the

Precious Blood of Jesus Christ

The Pope's intentions for July 2016 are that indigenous peoples, whose identity and very existence are threatened, will be shown due respect.

2017 MASS BOOK

The 2017 Parish Mass Book is now open. Sue in our office will be happy to help you schedule a Mass for a loved one at a weekend or daily Mass. The offering is $10.00.

Due to the many requests for Masses on the weekends, Mass intentions will be limited to 6 Saturday afternoon and/or Sunday Masses in the year, no more than 3 at the same Mass time. Thank you for your understanding!

Also, you may book the Sanctuary Candle for 2017 which burns for 2 weeks ($20) or the Special Intention Candle, Outdoor Mary Garden Candle or Outdoor Veteran’s Memorial Garden Candle, for 2016 and 2017, for 1 week ($10).
