From The Principal

Welcome
This week we welcome a new family to our school community as well as an additional Teacher Aide. Mrs Akima Ruddle has joined our staff after being based at Woodcrest College for 11 years.
Day 8 enrolments

As many parents are aware, state schools are staffed according to the number of children attending the school on Day 8. This was last Thursday 1st February, and our official enrolment total was 191 students. This means we will hold our current teaching staff on their allocated classes.
Lead Principal visits Minden

Mr Lee Gerchow, Small Schools Lead Principal Metropolitan Region, visited the school last Tuesday and made many positive comments regarding our approaches to teaching and learning. He particularly liked our processes for supporting all our students to ensure that every child is provided with opportunities to achieve their best. Mr Gerchow visited each class and spoke with some students. During his next visit, Mr Gerchow will be visiting all classrooms to observe how we teach reading and track reading development.
Student Safety

The school is aware that parking availability is currently limited while the roadworks are in progress. We appreciate parents’ cooperation in placing student safety first when parking and using the crossing to access and exit the school grounds. Somerset Council own the carpark and are aware of the difficulties the roadworks presents. The carpark adjacent to the Sports Centre also has limited parking availability and is primarily for staff use. There is no easy solution to the current situation, however, patience and common sense will ensure all users are safe during peak times.
School Captains and Leaders Induction Ceremony

On Friday 16 February we will officially acknowledge our 2018 school leaders. This event will take place during our senior assembly and will commence at 2:15pm. All our Minden families are welcome to celebrate this significant milestone with us.
Class Dojo

Dojo is the school’s preferred communication method as it allows instant messaging between school and home. Signing up is easy and costs nothing. Your child’s teacher can provide the forms with the necessary information. Dojo is a versatile app used for a range of purposes including: advising teachers of absences, upcoming events, homework requirements, sharing information specific to your child. We encourage all families to sign-up to ensure you don’t miss any essential information.
Christian Religious Instruction

CRI is offered to all families attending Minden. Lessons are held from 1:50 to 2:55pm on Fridays. Parents who want their child/ren to participate will need to complete a registration form (available from the office) if this has not been completed in previous years. Children are not allowed attend without parent permission. CRI teachers have an expectation that children will follow the school’s behaviour code. Any child displaying unacceptable behaviour during these lessons will be returned to their regular class.
Parent Teacher Interviews

Term 1 interviews will take place on Tuesday 20 March from 3:15 to 7:00pm. Parent teacher interviews provide a great opportunity for information sharing regarding student development across a number of areas. Booking details will be provided in future newsletters.
Illness

Our school has experienced an early onset of a “gastro bug”. We appreciate parents keeping sick children at home to reduce the risk of spreading the infection. Please be aware that the school is only able to administer medication when there is a doctor’s / pharmacist’s label attached. This includes over-the-counter medications such as Panadol and cough mixtures.
Commonwealth Banking.

As many of you would be aware, Minden school accesses the Commonwealth Bank School Banking Program. Students are able to open an account with the CBA at school and make deposits here at school. Students who make regular deposits are rewarded for doing so. The P&C receives $5 for each new account. This is an easy and fun way to encourage children to save.

Parents And Citizens Association News

Meeting
Our first meeting is Monday the 12th of February at 3.30pm. We would love to see you there!
Commonwealth School Banking
We will be holding a banking information morning on Monday the 12th February at the front gate from 8.30am. Pop by if you have any questions or to view the prizes available this year.
This year our focus is on consistent saving. Deposits can be from 5 cents! Students will be rewarded for every 10 deposits made.
School Banking is also a great fundraiser for our school. Our school receives a Regular Savers Contribution of $5 for every 10 deposits processed per student as well as an Annual Contribution which is based on the number of students who made at least one School Banking deposit in the prior year.
Exciting new Term 1 rewards with a Super Savers theme are now available, while stocks last!
Tuckshop
Thank you for supporting the tuckshop this year. Our volunteers work tirelessly to bring this service to the school and raise funds to support the school.
Please remember to pop your orders into the tuckshop box by Monday. Meals must be pre-ordered, and payment is by cash only. We are unable to accept eftpos or direct debit for tuckshop. The $5 meal deal is for a Wednesdays on first break.
Friday snack days will now be held on second break at 1.15pm. This will be counter sales only (no pre-orders). This gives the children to experience real world spending and cash handling skills. There is a range of Drinks, slushies, snacks, ice blocks and chips available. All items are priced at $2 or under. If you are able to help out a couple of times a term from 1pm-2pm, please contact Shannon 0422 253 098 or Millie 0424 167 850. We would love to have you join our team.
Book Fair
Our first Book Fair this year will be happening on March 1st, 2nd, 5th, 6th . This is a fantastic opportunity for students to enhance their love of reading by selecting and purchasing their own book. If you could assist on any of these mornings (8am-9am) please call Kylie on 0406 108 033 or leave your details at the office.

Prep News

Prep News:
Dojo: We now have all parents on board, if both parents would like to be joined with our class Dojo that is fine.
Parent support: We should have all family photos by now, if you have not brought a family photo in, please do so ASAP.Favorite books are needed by Monday 26th of February.
Booklist: Extra supplies of pencils, rubbers, glue sticks are important. We do not use your child’s supply for any other child. If your child needs another glue stick then we can access it quickly.
Partnership: Thanks to all those parents and grandparents that are now helping out in the classroom each week. Your support is greatly appreciated.
Homework: Homework commenced this week, please return on Friday with Library books. Children are encouraged to select own home readers assisting them to choose books of interest.
Lunchboxes: Remember we have 2 lunch breaks. Children need enough food for both breaks. (sandwiches and some healthy snacks for first break and fruit and snacks for second break)
Arrival and departure: Please let me know if your departure from school plans change. Waiting at the gate in the afternoon helps the Preps focus on getting themselves packed and ready to go home. I will message you, if you need to collect from the classroom – raining days. Please remember to come inside the school gate to collect your child for safety reasons.
Name writing: All children are able to write or copy their name, keep up the practice at home. If they are confident with their first name then you can start working on teaching them how to write their surname.
Thanks Mrs Williams, Mrs Rapley and the Prep Students
