§  Treasurer’s Report – Mr. Quinata

  • PTA Financial Information is posted on the UMS Website
  • Balance $1,795.00 status quo from the last meeting
  • No new funds received & No funds issued
  • No activities/transactions – therefore remains the same
  • PTA reimbursement request – Chamorro Chip Cookies @ $250.00

§  Principal’s Report – Agnes Guerrero

  • MID-TERM ACCREDITATION REPORT: April 26 and 27

Ø  Ms. Carino and Ms. Pama, Accreditation Chairpersons – recognized

Ø  Current - 6 year accreditation 2014-2020

Ø  Last accreditation visit was when UMS was located at Tiyan.

Ø  Chairpersons provided information about accreditation and what the process encompasses for accreditation.

o  Schoolwide action plan

§  Student behavior

§  Health and Safety

o  Evaluating performances and activities that are being implemented at UMS.

o  Parent Workshops to help keep parents informed of assessments and strategies that are being implemented, and understanding how that data is being used and tracked.

o  How has the school used PBIS and implemented the PBIS strategies? How is it effective and are the teachers provided with PD on PBIS?

o  Providing and implementing SOP on school safety including response times, contact with emergency services, and informing parents.

Ø  80+ pages of the accreditation report has been completed (Accomplishment)

Ø  The school community is committed to the action plan.

Ø  Scheduled WASC School Visit – April 2017 – the committee will validate what was reported.

  • SCHOOL INCIDENT

Ø  Informing and clarifying parents of the situation that occurred last Friday on the school campus that occurred during lunch period.

o  2 fights (2 fights engaged in a fight, another situation involved a student injuring a school personnel).

o  It was not a riot – the media miscommunicated the situation to the public.

Ø  Law enforcement was called immediately and a school lock down was deemed necessary in order to ensure student and staff safety.

Ø  Lunch was provided to all students in the classroom

Ø  School community will review and evaluate how to improve the processes and to ensure the safety of students and staff.

Ø  The school can never be 100% ready for any situation, however, the school is committed to student safety.

Ø  Drills, lock downs, shelter in place are practiced to ensure all know what to do.

Ø  Faculty have the dialogue with students to help them to understand the purpose of procedures and overall safety for all on the campus.

Ø  School Safety Committee will meet to discuss and review the situation to improve processes.

Ø  Parent: Communication with parents regarding the lock down

Ø  Guerrero: Safety comes first before we notify the parents

Ø  Parent: I contacted central office to inquire and no one knew of the situation at UMS

Ø  Guerrero: Deputy Cruz was informed of the matter, however, the clerks and secretaries were not informed.

o  We also had an irate parent who was informed that lock down included no one allowed on campus until the all clear was provided and the parent continued to give the school staff a hard time – this type of situations take the staff away from helping to address the matter on the campus.

o  The school community is committed to your child’s safety.

o  Methods will be developed to improve how information is funneled to the parents such as mass parent notifications, Power Announcement – After all the students are settled and safety is in place, the Power Announcement option will be employed.

  • Monday – No Classes – Guam Heritage Day
  • March 13 – 17, 2017

Ø  Mes Chamorro –– 13 – 17 March Recognition Assembly – Good grades and positive behaviors

Ø  Activities and Games – student talent to be shared

  • Last day of 3rd Quarter –– March 17
  • Please use PowerSchool to check your child’s grades and communicate with your child’ teacher if necessary. Please feel free to contact the school if you need to connect with your child’s teacher.
  • March 18, 2017 – Special Olympics ––UMS has 14 athletes 7:30 – 3:30
  • Students are welcome to support their fellow students and volunteer
  • March 20, 2017 –– No Classes –– Teacher Professional Development Day
  • March 25, 2017 –– Guam History Competition – UMS student representatives will be competing
  • March 29, 2017 –– Parent Teacher Conference 8AM to 1PM
  • School Sports/Activities:

Ø  Boys Basketball

Ø  Girls Soccer

Ø  Coed Badminton just finished – UMS OVERAL CHAMPIONS

Ø  Academic Challenge Bowl – UMS OVERALL CHAMPIONS

  • Please do not hesitate to give, give, give anything to appreciate your child’s teachers!
  • UMS will be participating in the Book Literacy Project – Battle of the Books 2017

Ø  Get students to READ

Ø  Will be allowed on Tuesday, March 7, 2017 instead of the Friday after the PTA Meeting.

Ø  Focus Groups – Still in the planning process – once this is decided, the information will be shared.

Ø  Congratulations to Eva, UMS Students - 2nd Place All Island Winner – Invasive Species Project

Ø  SPECIAL PERFORMANCE: UMS 6th Grade Choir

Ø  Dress Down Tickets will be distributed after the 6th grade choir performance
