Kanya Maha Vidyala (KMV), Jalandhar, organized a two day National Seminar on 23/24.9.2008 at its campus. The principal of the college, Dr. Anita Sharma invited the UNITED SIKHS Research Project (USRP) Coordinator, Prof. Jagdish Singh to present a paper on “Gurbani- Jeewan Jach” (Gurbani: A way of life). This college has made a name for itself in the Doaba Region of Punjab and is one of the leading women’s colleges in the region.

The seminar, in which the UNITED SIKHS Research Project’s participation was requested by the college, was sponsored by the University Grants Commission (UGC), the body which regulates and monitors universities in India. The USRP class in Amritsar has been liaising and fostering contacts with leading institutes in Punjab to involve maximum number of teachers and Post Graduate students in a healthy dialogue to set stage for research and exploration of life from the Sikh perspective. The class’ efforts have been noted and appreciated generously by the student and teacher fraternity and as a result such invitations, formal and informal, flow in quite regularly.

Prof. Singh read his paper emphasizing that in the true religion is not a part of life but it is rather the other way round. Existence of religion is eternal and life flowers in the lap of religion. He frowned upon the practice to use religion as a tool to make life ethical and moralistic. It is not that life has many parts of which religion is one, but it is religion within whose cradle countless dimensions of several layers of life manifest.

His paper was heard with rapt attention and later several speakers appreciated the level of scholarship that was evident in his paper. Although he subscribes to the wisdom of the old world, yet his thoughts are fresh and vibrant. His words capture the souls of his listeners immediately. Dr. Anita Sharma, the Principal, felicitated him and presented him with a memento. Later, the students and the staff of the Department of Punjabi of the college conversed with him for long promising to delve further into the subject. Everybody was all praise for the unique United Sikhs’ class in Amritsar i.e. the UNITED SIKHS Research Project after they were briefed about USRP’s activities. The seminar being a National Seminar was attended with important names from the Departments of Punjabi of the colleges of Punjab.

Prof. Jagdish Singh being felicitated.
