SUMMARY

Integral member of the Wall Systems Team, responsible for developing accurate and thorough takeoff estimates for the purpose of determining how much it will cost to provide a client or potential customer with PSI manufactured products or related services. This should be carried out with the goal of getting the best price that will win the contract in a competitive bidding situation, while ensuring that the contract can be carried out profitably. Work may be performed from a bill of quantities, a set of drawings provided by the client, or electronic medium supplied online. Details and releases itemized material list to Project Management for proper companywide dispersal. All work shall be done in a timely manner to meet the stringent time constraints that are required to handle the bid and delivery schedules.

ESTIMATOR-DETAILERESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

Estimating -

  • Tracks projects leads via construction reports from plan services, including but not limited to Dodge, ISQFT, REED Insight, Invitations to Bid, customer inquiries, and other sales leads that may be a direct result from Sales and Marketing networking with Architects/Contractors/Customers.
  • Once a new project is identified, it will be the responsibility of the estimator to track down bid documents and print out hard copies of plans, specs, details and addenda as needed.
  • Makes an initial assessment of the project and identifies areas that need additional information and or clarification. Then addresses with the appropriate project Architect and/or Construction Manager with a Request for Informationin order to limit PSI’s exposure during bid process.
  • Review specifications for material standards, project schedules, alternates, insurance requirements, bid forms, performance and payment bond requirements and any other item that would directly affect the project.
  • Highlights and generates a takeoff of PSI wall panel system components including panels, moldings, custom items, related products and materials as specified. Enters takeoff into excel spreadsheet and prices out that takeoff, including, but not limited to, all panel and trim components, buyouts, installation and freight.
  • Identifies & communicatesdiscrepancies & variations that may affect pricing, manufacturing, yield, installation or product performance.
  • Communicates and coordinates with project management, sales & marketing as necessary to assure accurate and timely estimates.
  • Works with Contract Administrator to facilitate bid bond requests or sub-contractor qualifications.
  • Utilizes established materials pricing and coordinates with sales, project manager, installers and other project stakeholders to assure a successful & profitable outcome.
  • Prepares the appropriate bid form/scope letter for the project, including the correct final base bid price, alternate prices, inclusions, exclusions, color information, and other qualifications that may be necessitated by the project.
  • Identifies bidders on each specific project, verify if addenda have been issued to the particular project, download and post relevant addenda to the construction documents.
  • Once a project has been quoted its Estimator-Detailer’s responsibility to get bid tabulations if possible and negotiate the final scope of work and pricing with the successful bidder/contractor.
  • Once a purchase order or subcontract agreement has been received, it’s the Estimator-Detailer’s responsibility to check for the correct price and make sure all inclusions, exclusions, alternates and specific bid/construction documents are stated and recorded properly.
  • Solicits feedback from Project Management, Manufacturing, Sales & Marketing and other stake holders during and after project completion to improve the estimation process and future project performances.
  • Does initial review of first draft of shop drawings, checking for scope of work and proper adherence to project specifications.
  • Reviews returned submittal drawings for any requested change orders and revises scope of work and pricing as necessary.
  • Reviews and responds to all change orders requests and approvals, keeping all team members apprised of any changes.
  • Processes further breakdown of phased installation projects as required by Project Management, Accounting, or the General Contractor.
  • Works closely with Sales, Customer Service, Accounting, Project Administration and Project Management to gather required project information to assure project success.
  • Works & communicates with all project stakeholders to assure success of project.
  • Networks & builds relationships with architects, contractors & customers and assists with the development of sales leads and project opportunities.

Detailing -

  • Participates in the shop drawing review process, helping to insure that all relevant information is depicted in order to properly detail the project. If information is lacking, works closely with Project Management and Drafting in order to secure required information during the submittal process.
  • Details and releases projects as prioritized by the master delivery schedule.
  • Works closely with Project Management to insure projects are broke down into proper phases and releases.
  • Determines if field dimensions are required in order to detail a project. When dimensions are required, works from the shop drawings to draft a field dimension set of drawings to aid in obtaining required field dimensions.
  • When determined by the size and scope of the project, develops a multi-panel takeoff to be used for optimization in order to determine raw material requirements.
  • Working from the approved shop drawings and finalized color schedules, breaks down and details itemized material requirements, including panel and trim counts, colors, fire rating, finish sizes, kerfing and edge band requirements, labeling instructions, and pricing. As part of the release, insures that all dollars match up with the project specific Schedule of Values. Also,communicates the need for specialized raw materials, designation or requirements. Double checks final release for accuracy.
  • Generates a final set of installation drawings for use by the installer or customer. Installation drawings to include any project specific labeling designations, finish colors, finish sizes,field dimensions and project specific information.
  • Works closely with Project Management and Estimating to release any shortages or material requirements generated by change orders.

SKILLS AND INTERESTS

Estimating-Detailing is a professional business career and involves a range of skills and interests. Estimator-Detailers combine site experience with quantity surveying skills, commercial acumen and a mind capable of financial analysis. Math and IT skills are important, as are a strong problem-solving ability and keen attention to detail. Must be able to manage multiple projects. Organizational and presentational skills are crucial, and must be able to meet tight deadlines. Estimator-Detailers also need an appreciation of data confidentiality, and to be aware of elements like price trends, regulations and exchange rates.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Associates Degree inConstruction Management or related field or two years of experience estimating, reviewing, and submitting projects; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized and non-standardized situations.

Estimator-Detailers spend most of their time in the office, but the job isn’t always 8 to 5. The nature of working with jobs that require fixed deadlines for tender submissions means that additional work hours may often be required.

The Employee will be based in a supervised team environment, but will be required to use his/her own initiative. In addition, the Employee will sometimes be required, and/or offered the opportunity to visit and perform work at jobsites. Protective clothing and proper badging/identification is normally compulsory for such visits.
