INTERNSHIP APPLICATION For Office Use Only

PAID INTERNSHIP IN CREATIVE LEARNING AT THE LYRIC THEATRE

Internships are part and parcel of a modern, flexible economy. Where once they were an informal means of gaining practical insight into a particular career, today they are a rung on the ladder to success.

[Milburn Report]

THE DEPARTMENT

The department was set up in 2010 prior to the opening of the new £18 million theatre in Ridgeway Street. It currently operates with two full-time members of staff, a part-time Schools Coordinator and a team of freelance practitioners. In addition to an extensive programme of training workshops for actors, aspiring actors and young people, an outreach programme extends across the country in Primary & Secondary Schools and Community venues.

We work with other locally based organisations eg Kids in Control (www.kicproject.co.uk) and regularly deliver projects such as the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Open Stages and Dream 16 (www.rsc.org.uk) and the National Theatre’s Connections (www.nationaltheatre.org.uk).

The work of the department is greatly valued by the Senior Management Team and the Board of Trustees. Our marketing promotes Creative Learning as being at the heart of the Lyric Theatre.

THE ETHOS

In line with the Strategic Objectives of the whole organisation, Creative Learning strives for excellence. Whether for a seasoned actor or a 6 year-old novice, the aim is to raise the bar of achievement. Our projects are designed with a distinct emphasis on learning and in the belief that working in theatre is a craft, which needs to be practised: a lifelong process of honing the necessary skills.

THE INTERNSHIP

We are seeking to offer to a well-motivated, recent graduate the chance to share in the work of a busy and exciting department and play a key role in various Drama education projects.

A significant amount of time (8-10 hours per week) will be spent assisting and supporting facilitators in our Theatre and Summer Schools workshops, particularly those for younger children. There are also opportunities to engage with event planning and the administration of various projects, both in the Lyric and as part of our outreach programme in schools and community venues.

Please note that there are no acting or directing opportunities associated with this role.

REQUIREMENTS

Theatre is not a nine-to-five job! Most of our work in Creative Learning takes place at weekends and in the evenings. Consequently, we are looking for someone who is totally flexible in their working hours and can offer enthusiasm, stamina and a proactive and imaginative approach.

Good interpersonal and communication skills are essential to deal with young people, parents and other staff. The appointed Intern will share our commitment to excellence.

Applicants should be between 18-24 years old and unemployed or working in an unrelated sector. They should be able to demonstrate the following:

·  Level 4 or above (HNC) qualification

·  Some experience of facilitating drama workshops

·  Some experience of working with young people in any capacity

·  Competent IT and Social Media skills

CONDITIONS

The Internship will ideally commence at the beginning of July 2017, or as soon as possible thereafter and will end six months later.

30 hours commitment per week is expected, but this would be averaged out across the 6 month period eg some busy weeks might involve a full 37.5 hours or more and others much less time to compensate. 2.8 weeks’ holidays will be given (calculated pro rata based on 5.6 weeks for a 12 month period) but these must be taken at specified times.

A bursary of £211.50 per week will be paid. Travel expenses to and from the theatre will not be covered. This is based on the average hours worked over the 6 month period of the Internship. Should the appointed person leave the post early, the Lyric reserve the right to hold back payment if hours are owed to the organisation.

The appointment will be subject to a probationary period of 2 months, during which performance will be reviewed and the internship can be terminated with 2 weeks’ notice.

A full induction into the organisation will be provided.

At this stage in the development of the department, we cannot realistically predict the possibility of there being a full-time contract at the end of the internship.

One month’s notice will be required should the Intern decide to resign the post.
