Skills and Abilities: e.g. / Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills, and ability to information to meet a range of levels of understanding of clients and carers
Ability to pass on skills to carers and other professionals to enable them to carry out treatment programmes for communication difficulties
Ability to implement and adapt programmes
Ability to recognise own clinical competencies and the need for onward referral for more specialist advice
Ability to reflect on practice to identify own strengths and development needs
Ability to demonstrate effective team working
Able to work in a complementary way with the education staff to provide integrated SLT programmes for children and their families
Ability to work with parents and other professionals collaboratively
Able to successfully manage difficult and sensitive situations such as where there is a conflict of opinion about how an individual’s needs can be best met e.g. when parental anxiety is very high, or in cases of child protection. / Knowledge and experience of clinical governance / Application/Interview

Knowledge required: / Working knowledge of a range of therapeutic approaches for children- to include Phonological, Language development, Total Communication.
Knowledge of range of standardised and informal assessments.
Knowledge of Specific Language Impairment.
Knowledge of Stammering / How to apply a range of Communication strategies such ‘colourful semantics’, Hanen approach, signing and ability to individualise intervention programmes according to client need
Able to advise on adaptations and differentiate the National Curriculum for children with complex communication needs. / Application/Interview

Experience required: / Experience of early years/ primary children with a range of needs.
Experience of working unsupervised
Ability to identify areas for own personal/professional development
Evidence of CPD to maintain and develop competencies and knowledge base e.g. working with more specialist staff, Specific Interest Groups (RCSLT registered), and short specialist courses, self-directed study
Able to provide intervention for children with a range ofnon-complex needs and to recognise when to refer on for complex needs.
To partake in child reviews to enable multi-agency co-ordination, planning and intervention.
To represent DHRT Speech & Language Service at reviews/ Statements of Special Educational Need. / Experience of working within multi-disciplinary teams
