Responsible for: Managing the Hidden Histories, Hidden Historians project

Salary: £28,127 pro rata 0.8 FTE

Period of contract: 22 months

Base: Desk space available in Manchester Histories office and also possibility for flexible working

Job Purpose

To manage the delivery of the Hidden Histories Hidden Historians project for Manchester Histories. Hidden Histories, Hidden Historians will celebrate and prioritise the hidden heritage and stories of Greater Manchester, exploring and creating new ways of supporting communities and individuals to reveal those less familiar narratives, and stimulate mechanisms to enable heritage to thrive in communities.

Job Description

Working closely with the Manchester Histories Chief Executive to:

·  manage all elements of the Hidden Histories Hidden Historians project;

·  build strong relationships and provide direct support and guidance for 6 community groups. and provide advice surgeries for individual community based historians/researchers in the development of their skills over the course of the project;

·  co-ordinate the production, delivery and marketing of toolkits and training workshops working with key partners such as the Archives+, University of Manchester, and Manchester Metropolitan University;

·  work closely with the MH Chief Executive to co-ordinate the increased engagement of community organisations and individuals in Manchester Histories Festival, ensuring it is an accessible showcase for local and social histories;

·  set-up and manage a thriving new network for community based groups and individuals interested in exploring and celebrating the local and social histories of Greater Manchester;

·  liaise with all project participant organisations and individuals maintaining and supporting relationships and effective communications;

·  co-ordinate the Hidden Histories Hidden Historians Steering Group meetings and communications;

·  work closely with the independent evaluation consultants to ensure that a high-quality monitoring and evaluation takes place throughout the Hidden Histories Hidden Historians project that measure the social impact of participating in histories and heritage;

·  purchase, with advice from specialist organisations, any equipment required for the project;

·  ensure accurate and efficient budgeting and financial management of the project, including providing monthly financial reports to the MH Chief Executive;

·  manage events to be produced as part of the project;

·  work with MH’s volunteer Volunteer Co-ordinator to recruit and support volunteers to work on the project;

·  ensure the completion of Risk Assessments, Disclosure & Barring Service checks and compliance with H&S, for all activities and events during the project when necessary;

·  presentation of monthly project reports to MH Chief Executive;

·  champion the work of Manchester Histories and be an advocate for the organisation;

·  support MH Chief Executive in the dissemination of learning and outcomes from the project;

·  ensure compliance with MH’s Equal Opportunities and Child and Vulnerable Adults Policies.

Reporting to: Manchester Histories Chief Executive

Line Management

There will be no formal line management responsibility but you will be responsible for managing volunteers involved in the project and working on the community engagement elements of Manchester Histories Festival.

Budgetary responsibility

You will be responsible for managing the budget for Hidden Histories Hidden Historians ~£35,000.

Additional Information

The individual must be flexible and be able to respond to needs at busy times, and prepared to work unsociable hours.

They must be a driver with a current full license and use of their own car.


Person Specification

Essential

·  At least 5 years’ experience of working with and engaging community groups and individuals in the cultural sector, ideally in histories and heritage.

·  A commitment to and passion for working with people to transform lives through shared working and collaborative support and partnerships

·  Experience of developing and managing strategic and community projects and events.

·  Excellent communication skills and the ability to work sensitively and respectfully with a wide range of people.

·  Experience of working with people from diverse backgrounds, experiences and all ages.

·  Experience of working in partnership with a wide range of partners, including individuals, cultural organisations, Local Authorities, schools, venues and community groups to deliver a shared outcome.

·  Confident in delivering and facilitating public meetings with a wide range of stakeholders.

·  Experience of delivering public events and doing so whilst complying with all Health & Safety requirements.

·  Experience of working with writers and designers to co-ordinate the collation of materials to produce official publications.

·  Experience of and ability to manage day-to-day budgets and financial management.

·  Confidence and ability to personally manage a diverse and demanding workload, and to meet key deadlines.

·  Excellent organisational skills and ability to prioritise own workload.

·  Experience of conducting on-going monitoring and evaluation of projects.

·  Experience of managing a team of paid staff or volunteers.

·  Excellent computer skills, including full proficiency in Word and Excel.

·  Availability and willingness to work at evenings and weekends.

·  Compliance with Manchester Histories’ Equal Opportunities, Health & Safety and Child and Vulnerable Adults Policies.

·  Ability to work as part of a team.

·  Full driving licence.

Desirable

·  Knowledge of Greater Manchester’s histories and heritage sector.

·  Familiar with the use of digital and social media, for example Twitter and Facebook

·  Previous experience working on a Heritage Lottery Fund supported project.
