The Pleasant Hill Ranger District will advertise a permanent full time Archeological Technician position with the Duty station located at the District Office in Clarksville, AR. The purpose of this Outreach Notice is to inform the pool of the potential applicants about this employment opportunity. The position will be open to current federal employees. The Outreach is running from June 12, 2012 through July 12, 2012.

One year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower level in the federal service is required. Specialized experience is experience which is directly related to the position to be filled, and which has equipped the candidate with particular knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.

About the Position:

The position will be the Archeological Technicianfor the 272,000 acre Pleasant Hill District with primary duties including program support for the Heritage Resource program and some recreation program support. Duties will include fieldwork in support of Archeological Surveys, Archeological Data and/or Documentation Preparation and support of the District recreation program.

For the Archeological Program, task will included designing ground search strategies to suit specific archeological survey project terrain and vegetation cover. Must be able to traverse steep rugged terrain and be self-motivated. The person will select, interpret and apply technical guidelines to analyze archeological data n preparing reports, makes recommendations to the Archeologist that will be used in determinations of effects and determinations of eligibility. The selected individual will compile and report information about the nature and extent of known cultural resources.

For the Recreation Program, task will include assisting the recreation technician in the maintenance of developed recreation sites. This assistance will primarily be in the peak recreation season, April-August. There are 7 developed sites on the District.

  • Redding Campground- 25 camp sites, well water system, shower/restroom, canoe access
  • Horsehead-10 camp sites, 12 picnic sites, well water system, shower/restroom, 2 SST, playground, lake.
  • Ozone- 8 camp sites, group shelter/8 tables seating 60, 2 SST, historic interpretive trail
  • Wolf Pen- 6 camp sites, 5 picnic sites, 2 SST, canoe landing
  • Shooting Ranger- 12 shooting stations
  • High Bank canoe access
  • Indian Creek Canoe access/OHT trailhead connector loop

About the Forest and District:

District topography is rugged with bench/bluff features and with elevation varying from 600 to 2100 feet above sea level in the Boston Mountains of the Ozark Highlands.

The Pleasant Hill Ranger District in is one of six Districts that make up the Ozark-St. Francis National Forests totaling over 1,160,000 acres. The District office and duty station for the position is located in Clarksville, AR.

The Ozark National Forest is located in the north central and northwestern part of Arkansas, while the St. Francis National Forest consists of 21,000 acres located in eastern Arkansas. The forests are a mixture of pine and hardwoods. Magazine Mountain, the highest point in Arkansas, is located on the forest, and Blanchard Caverns, an extensive cave system is also located on the Forest.

The District employs approximately 27 permanent full-time people. Temporary employees and students add to that total on a seasonal basis. The District moved into a new office in early 2012. The District works very effectively as a team, and has been recognized as such with District of the Year award for several years. There are opportunities for all employees toparticipate in numerous resource activities, such as prescribed burning and environmental education for school children.

About the area:

Clarksville is located in the Arkansas River Valley along I-40 about 100 miles west of Little Rock and 60 miles east of Ft. Smith, Arkansas. To the north are the Boston Mountains and to the south lie the Ouachita Mountains. Clarksville’s population is 8,730 and is the county seat of Johnson County, which has a population of 25,540. Climate is typical of the southeast with hot humid summers and relatively mild winters.

Clarksville is a growing small city with over 2,000 students in an excellent secondary school system. Three other more rural schools are also located in the county. Clarksville is home of the University of the Ozarks (a private 4-year university); Arkansas Tech University, a state-supported institution at Russellville, AR is 25 minutes away. Fayetteville, AR is the home of the University of Arkansas and the renowned “Arkansas Razorbacks.” Fayetteville is approximately 2 hours away.

Clarksville has a variety of employers from production line positions to highly skilled machine works/robotics operators.

Clarksville has an outstanding Boy’s Club/Girl’s Club organization, which involves children from age 8 through Jr. High School; offering soccer, basketball, baseball, and softball. The city of Clarksville recently passed legislation for the creation of an aquatics park with will include a new Olympic size swimming pool. This is an excellent opportunity in which to raise a family within a community of diverse cultures.

Hunting/fishing/hiking/hang gliding/rock climbing/mtn. biking/kayaking/camping/water skiing or whatever your outdoor passion is, it is all near here.

Housing is still relatively reasonable with new homes beginning around $60K and on up. Older homes are $60-80K. Land in the rural area is rising in price with accessible property beginning around $2,000/ac. Currently, it is a buyer’s market with good selection for homes in the area.
