Open End / Box Wrench

For your next part, you will recreate the “Open End / Box Wrench” shown above. You will use what you have learned to create this object from previous drawings to make the part, a 3D model made up of the basic features and then make a dimensioned 3-View drawing of it.

“Open End Sketch”

You will begin this lesson by creating the new part.

1.  Click New , Click Part., Click OK.

Next: Set up measurement units to be in “inches” – 3 Decimals (ANSI)

1.  Click on “Options” icon.

2.  Click on “Document Properties” tab.

3.  Now click “Units”.

4.  Under “Unit system” click on “IPS”. Hit

NEXT:

1.  Click on the “Features toolbar” tab. Then click on

Extruded Boss/Base icon.

2.  Move the pointer over the TOP plane to highlight it, then select it.

The display changes, so that the TOP plane is facing you.

Your sketch is now open on the: TOP plane.

OPEN END #1

1. Sketching the Open End profile:

Click or select Insert / Sketch.

A.  Make sure that you start at the Origin.

B.  Sketch the profile as shown here using the Line tool. and the 3-Point Arcs

C.  Begin by placing a horizontal Centerline through the Origin .

Place an 10º angled Centerline

from off of the Orgin.

D.  Now place another Centerline from off of the Orgin

and prependicular to the 10º angled Centerline.

E.  Next place two parallellines Centered

.625 or 5/8” apart above

and below the 10º angled

Centerline.

F.  Trim these lines to a

length of .618 off of the

centerline.

G.  Now add the First 3-Point Arcand

dimenionit to a radis of .373. Place a

Point at a distace of .204 from the orgin

2. Sketching the “Outer Edge” of the Open End:

A.  Start this by adding point to the 10º centerline

at a distace of .400 from the orgin.

B.  Now add a Centerpoint Arc and dimension

at 1in. radius.

C.  Draw the arc as shown.

D. Now add two 3-Point Arcs E. Next you need to add two aditional

2. Dimension to 1in. radius.

F. Add the Relations needed, to fully define the sketch.

Set arcs Tangent to each other.

G. Now trim extra arcs.

H.  Select the Smart Dimension tool, click on the

edges of the 2 arcs** and place the dimension anywhere.

-  Select the Leaders tab from the Properties tree.

-  Select the Max options for both arcs.

3. Extruding the base feature:

- Click or select Insert / Boss-Base

/ Extrude.

- End Condition: Mid Plane

- Extrude Depth: .250 in.

-Click OK

TRANSITION SKETCH – HANDLE #2

1. Creating the transition sketch:

- Select TOP plane from Feature manager tree.

- Click or select Insert / Sketch.

-Sketch the profile below using Lines (Note: only add the fillets after the sketch is fully).

- Add dimensions or Relations as needed.

2. Extruding the Transition feature:

- Click or select Insert / Boss-Base / Extrude.

- End Condition: Mid Plane

- Extrude Depth: .175 in.

- Click OK

Go to Top menu, click “Insert”, go down to “Annotations”, insert/click “Note” this will add a text box to your drawing. Add the following information:

BOX END #3

1. Adding the reference geometry:

- Select the face as indicated.

- Click or select Insert / Sketch.

- Sketch a Centerline at the mid-point of the two vertical edges.

Select this face.

Add a Centerline

at Mid PT.

- Exit the Sketch or select Insert / Sketch.

2. Creating a new work plane: Plane at Angle

- Click or select Insert / Reference Geometry / Plane.

- For Reference EntitiesSelect the Sketch4 (centerline) and the upper face of the Transition.

- In the At Angle dialog, type 10 deg. (arrow).

- Click OK

- The system creates a plane that starts from the reference face and pivots around the centerline.

- The preview of the new 10 deg. Plane.

3. Creating the Closed-End sketch:

- Select the new 10° plane from FeatureManager tree.

- Click or select Insert / Sketch.

- Sketch a circle and add dimensions as shown.

Horizonal

4. Extruding the Closed-end Feature(Box End).

- Click or select Insert / Boss-Base / Extrude.

- Direction 1: Blind

- Extrude Depth: .200 in.

- Direction 2: Blind

- Extrude Depth: .130 in.

- Click OK

5. Adding a 12-Sided polygon hole:

- Select the face indicated as the sketch plane.

- Click or select Insert / Sketch.

- Sketch a Polygon with 12 sides

- Add a .625 Dimension to the inside construction circle.

- Add a Concentric relation as shown.

6.Extruding the cut:

- Click or select Insert / Cut / Extrude.

- End Condition: Through All

- Click OK

RECESS PROFILE #4

1. Creating the Recess profile:

-  Select the face indated as the sketch plane.

-  Click or select Insert/Sketch

-  Sketch the profile shown below using Lines and click onto find, Tangent Arcs.

-  Add Dimensions and Relations to fully define the sketch.

2.Extruding the Recessed feature:

- Click or select Insert / Cut / Extrude.

- End Condition: Blind

- Extrude Depth: .030in.

- Click OK

3. Mirroring the Recessed feature:

- Hold down the CONTROL key, then select the TOP reference plane and the Recessed feature from Feature Manger tree.

- Click or select Insert / Pattern Mirror Menu, then select Mirror.

- Click OK

- Rotate the model to verify the results.

ADDING FILLETS #5

1. Adding the .030” fillets:

- Click or select Insert / Features / Fillet/Found.

- Enter .030 in. for Radius.

- Select the edges as shown for Edges to fillet on both sides.

- Tangent Propagation: Enabled

- Click OK

2. Adding the .050” fillets:

-Repeat step #4 and add a .050” fillet to the 4 edges shown below.

3. Adding the .015” fillets:

- Clickand add a .015” fillet to the edges and faces shown below.

- Click OK

-Verify you fillets with the model shown below by rotating and Zooming in as needed.

2. Extruding the text:
