GENERAL DESCRIPTION
This cottage has year round access and is 30 minutes from the town of Haliburton and 15 minutes from the Village of West Guilford. It features good privacy, 130’ waterfront in a sheltered bay shared by only two other cottages and is just less than one acre of land. The lot is slightly elevated with the cottage built on a granite rock ridge providing a panoramic westerly view of KennisisLake and the setting sun, however, the front deck and stairs provide gradual access to the lakefront. There is a sandy and rocky shoreline, typical of the area, with a shallow entry waterfront for children and also deep water for swimming in the bay. The cottage is spacious and comfortable and features a fieldstone wood burning fireplace and an open concept design with vaulted ceilings in the main living area. There are walkouts from the sunroom, living room and master bedroom to the deck. Natural light pours through a palladium style window in the living room and a large bay window in the breakfast area. Rough it in comfort! Kennisis is a large lake surrounded by Little Kennisis Lake, RedstoneLake and Little Redstone Lake located in the natural beauty of the Haliburton Highlands.
KennisisLakeMarina, (705) 754-2352, is located on the same road as the cottage and you will pass it as you drive in along Wilkinson Road.
The marina offers a variety of items for summer rental such as small aluminum motorboats, paddleboats and ski boats as well as water ski’s and life jackets.
If you are interested in any of these rentals please call them to reserve the equipment at least four to six weeks in advance.
The Halibuton Forest & Wild Life Reserve fronts onto KennisisLake and is a fabulous place offering your family a real adventure in the Canadian outdoors. It is a privately owned forest in Central Ontario’s Haliburton Highlands. The Wolf Centre features a captive pack of Grey Wolves (Canis Lupus) that arrived in Canada in 1993 from Michigan’s Upper Penninsula and occupies a 15-acre enclosure inside the forest. “A Walk In The Clouds” in addition to The Wolf Centre the Haliburton Forest & Wild Life Reserve offers a unique experience that you will not soon forget. From the moment you arrive, your professional guides will lead you through a unique and very dynamic tour, “A Walk in the Clouds”! From river basin to tree tops, the tour takes in the entire splendor that nature has to offer. This is a four-hour trip that departs the Base Camp twice a day and consists of a ½ kilometer walk along a scenic meandering creek, a boat ride across a wilderness lake to large stand of old growth White Pine. From here the tour continues into the canopy of these giant trees. The canopy boardwalk is the ultimate highlight of this outing. Half a kilometer long, the canopy boardwalk winds through the tree tops, some 20 metres above the forest floor! A platform, suspended from the treetops above, becomes a gathering place where you can enjoy a leisurely tree top snack while your guide elaborates on the forest environment and the spectacular view across the lakes surrounding you.

We love this area and have rented cottages here for the last 15 years. Cottage life and Northern Ontario holidays are fun and relaxing and we think something everyone should experience. Obviously summer is when everyone thinks about going ‘up North’ but a winter vacation can be as much fun with the whole area buzzing with activity. The fall colours will take your breath away! Picture perfect!
Even if you just want to sit by the fireplace, read a book or listen to music, there is nothing better than doing it at the cottage!
HOUSEHOLD RULES – A NOTE TO OUR GUESTS
We would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to our cottage and extend our best wishes for an enjoyable vacation. In order to make your stay more pleasant the following pages include valuable information regarding the cottage itself, instructions on the operation of the equipment, garbage disposal, and some general notes on how to find cleaning supplies and that sort of thing. Also included in the Household Rules are general notes on the cottage community that you might find useful. In the event of an emergency or if you encounter a problem, emergency contact numbers are provided herein.

The Household Rules are a further addition to the terms and conditions of rental outlined on your rental agreement. Please review these documents carefully and ensure that all members of your party are familiar with the contents, particularly the condition of rental and cleanliness guildelines. Just as you appreciated the clean and well-maintained state in which you found the cottage, we ask that you leave the cottage clean and tidy for the next guests.
Entertaining guests is very much a part of cottage life, however, the maximum number of persons determined for this cottage is based on the capacity of the septic system, the number of beds and our wishes. Remember that our family and friends, in addition to you, occupy the cottage on an ongoing basis through the year. Please do not exceed the maximum number of persons allowed with regard to guests. Your thoughtful consideration of our cottage neighbours’ need for peace and quiet would also be appreciated.

POWER/HEAT SOURCE
Our cottage is heated by forced air propane heat as is common in most rural areas and the electrical power may be interrupted from time to time and it may stay off a little longer than it would in the city. There are flashlights and candles you may use in case this happens. Also, if the power does go off, remember that the water system usually operates on an electric pump. DO NOT RUN THE WATER WHEN THE ELECTRICITY IS OFF. You may empty the lines and need to prime the pump if this happens. The main power box is in the basement, behind the laundry room. The power stays on permanently.
FIREPLACE
Please do not burn artificial logs or anything other than regular firewood in the fireplace. Do not overload the fireplace. Ensure that the fireplace flue is open prior to lighting a fire and that the fireplace doors are in place while a fire is burning. Do not cut down trees on the property for firewood. Unless otherwise specified, the firewood provided should be more than adequate for your needs and we ask that you take care not to burn excessive amounts of firewood unnecessarily. Do not cut/split wood on the fireplace hearth or anywhere inside the cottage.

Outdoor Fires- NOT PERMITTED DURING SUMMER! TOO DANGEROUS!
Recreation “campfires” are only allowed in the established fire pit area. Before lighting any fire out of doors, check with the Haliburton Forest Base Camp with regards to fire regulations, restrictions and required permits. Do not deplete firewood supplies but instead please endeavour to use driftwood.
WASTE DISPOSAL
Never leave garbage outside the cottage. Country critters (racoons, bears, skunks…) love garbage. Unless you wish to be visited by these friendly and hungry animals, please follow the garbage disposal instructions below.
The DUMP is on Kennisis Lake Road by the Haliburton Outdoor Equipment Dealership and you will need the bright green laminated card that is hanging on the key hook outside the Laundry Room. There are Black Bears at the dump!
WATER SOURCE
We use the lake as our water source as do most cottage properties. The water is treated by a UV light/filtration system to ensure that it is safe to drink. We bring our own bottled drinking water and we recommend you do too!
The pump is in the basement. If there are any problems call us. The Hot Water Tank is in the basement please do not adjust the temperature setting!
BATHROOM/SEPTIC SYSTEM
This cottage operates on a septic system. The septic system is a very sensitive, and integral part of cottage life. The basic rule is do not put anything down the toilet other than natural waste and toilet paper (and be conservative with the paper!). No paper towels, Kleenex, tampons, pads, matches, hair, grease, strong chemicals, etc. These are guaranteed to back up the system, and believe me, you do not want that to happen! Also, it is easier on the system if you flush only when absolutely necessary. If the power goes off for a period of time and you need to flush the toilet more than once, fill the tank with water from the lake.
The septic system has a maximum capacity with regards to use (i.e. number of persons, washrooms, laundry, etc.) Please observe the maximum number of persons determined for this cottage as indicated in our agreement.

APPLIANCES
All the appliances are new and are available for your use. There are operating manuals for all the appliances in the kitchen cabinet over the fridge.
BARBEQUE
This is a new gas barbeque and the operating manual is in the kitchen cabinet. Please do not burn any foreign materials (i.e. wood) in the barbeque. It is a gas/propane type. The barbeque grill should be cleaned/brushed after each use.
Please make sure when lighting the barbeque that you have the lid open and the match or lighter burning before you turn on the propane supply valve on the barbeque.
TELEVISION, SATELLITE DISH, VCR, CD PLAYER
The television reception in cottage country is very limited so we have installed the Bell ExpressVu satellite dish for your use. The operating manual is stored in the entertainment centre with the equipment. It’s complicated! Good Luck!
You may use all the audio visual equipment while you are our guests. You may want to bring your favorite CD’s and movies for a rainy day. Enjoy!
RECREATIONAL EQUIPMENT
You may use all the recreational equipment. When boating, remember that the law requires one approved lifejacket or personal flotation device for each person on board. We have indicated on your equipment sheet the number that we have available, if you need more please bring your own or arrange to rent more at the marina. Please return all equipment to the storage area you found it when you arrived.
MARINA LAUNCH
If you or a guest of yours would like to bring a boat up to the cottage there are public launch facilities available at KennisisLakeMarina on Wilkinson Road.

COMMUNITY NOTES
Cottage communities have become very integrated. Everyone knows everyone else and keeps an eye on each other’s property for them. Don’t be surprised if someone asks who you are – explain that you are our guests. Your due consideration of our place in the community would be appreciated – no loud parties or noise after 11:00 p.m. and observe normal boating and water guidelines, etc.
Groceries, banks, variety stores, beer & liquor stores, in fact everything, is available in Haliburton. However, you can pick up milk, bread and newspapers at the Marina and there is a small grocer (General Store) in West Guilford which you will pass as you drive in. The Cookhouse Restauant at the HaliburtonForest and Wild Life Reserve serves breakfast, lunch and dinner if you want to eat out.
I have left a binder of brochures and an area map at the cottage as a reference guide if you would like to explore the area. Please leave this binder in tact for all our guests to use. If you remove some information, please return it before you leave. Please sign our Guest Book before you leave. Thanks.
TELEPHONE
Our guests are welcome to use the cottage telephone for local calls, however, please use your calling credit cards for long distance calls. Obviously we will know by our billing when calls were placed and therefore who placed them so we are trusting that you will use your cards! In case of emergencies disregard the above!
OTHER NOTES
Since we use the cottage ourselves we leave some food supplies or staples at the cottage. You are welcome to use these if you need them, but we ask that you replace any supplies that become depleted during your stay.
CHECK IN AND CHECK OUT
Without exception check in time is 2:00 p.m. and check out time is 11:00 a.m. Your strict adherence to this schedule is mandatory in order to allow time for cottage maintenance and preparation for the next cottage guests.

INSECTS
Insects and mice are very much a part of cottage life. To discourage these pests endeavour to keep exterior screen doors closed at all times.
CLEANING CHECKLIST
We would appreciate your thoughtfulness and consideration in leaving the cottage thoroughly clean and tidy, as it was for your arrival. I will arrange for a cleaning service, if you prefer, at an additional cost of $100.00 paid four weeks prior to occupancy. You must advise me that you want this cleaning service when you pay the final installment of the rental, or I will assume that you will do your own clean up. The cleaning supplies are provided. If you need to replace a cleaning supply while you are here please buy soaps that are low in phosphates.
INSIDE THE COTTAGE

[ ]Wipe off all table/island/counter tops and all kitchen appliances

[ ]Check coffee maker – remove coffee grounds & filter
[ ]Clean tub, shower enclosure, shower, sinks, toilets, mirrors in bathrooms
[ ]Fireplace – make sure fire out – flue is closed, and ashes cleaned up and disposed of.
[ ]Clean fingerprints/smudges from sliding glass/screen doors & windows.
DECK/OUTSIDE AREAS
[ ]Make sure patio furniture, cushions etc. are stored in the sunroom.
[ ]Check for and dispose of cigarette butts.
[ ]Make sure BBQ grill is cleaned off, and that BBQ & propane line are turned off and cover put on.
