DAY 01 27 Dec 11/ 03 Jan 12 Arrival – Alexander Bay

Meet at 16:00 at the Fuel Station at Alexander Bay Gate. Proceed to Pachtvlei Campsite 10 km inland on the banks of the Orange River. The river at Pachtvlei is safe to cool down in. Clients can fish for carp, yellow fish and barbel in the river. Ensure you have a fresh water fishing permit.

Overnight: Pachtvlei camping (Rustic campsite with cold showers)

DAY 02 28 Dec 11/ 04 Jan 12 Orange River Mouth

Depart for a day’s fishing to the Orange River mouth near Alexander Bay The last 3km to the mouth is a loose 4x4 sand trail. Steenbras and kabeljou can be caught from the beach at the mouth and

Those who are not interested in fishing can relax on the beach and walk in the estuary, which is area. The surrounding Orange River Wetland is declared as a RAMSAR site and is home to more than 60 bird species including pelicans and many flamingos.

Just outside Alexander Bay is the Lichen Hill, the only one of its kind in South Africa. The Richtersveld vegetation has unique species with awesome adoptions to survive in its semi desert climate. - Lichen is neither plant nor animal, consisting of algae and fungi living together in symbioses.

Return in the late afternoon to Pachtvlei.

DAY 03 29 Dec 11/ 05 Jan 12 Alexander Bay - Diamond Coast

Continue south along the coastline to the small harbour town Port Nolloth. This is crayfish and diamond country. Visit the harbour with its diamond dredgers. Continue on a short visit to McDougall’s Bay, a popular seaside destination for the people of the Northern Cape.

Continue on the dirt road to Kleinzee on the West Coast. We enter the secretive, previously restricted diamond area owned by The Beers. Continue south to the Koingnaas area. Time at leisure for a coastline walk. The Crayfish lovers can try their luck in the cold Atlantic. Ensure you have the necessary permits.

DAY 04 30 Dec 11/ 06 Jan 12 Diamond Coast

Explore the Diamond Coast on the 37km Shipwreck 4x4 Route. Throughout the years the stormy Atlantic has prevented many ships to reach their destination. They found their final resting place at the coastline between Koingnaas and Kleinzee. The trail goes past three of these wrecks, the Piratiny, Arosa and Border, untouched beaches and other interesting sights. Minimum of 8 persons are required for departure on these 4x4 trails. If less persons, clients have to pay the balance of R148-20 per person per trail.

Afternoon at leisure. The divers and anglers can try their luck. A relaxed coastline walk can be done.

DAY 05 31 Dec 11/ 07 Jan 12 Diamond Coast – Hondeklip Bay

Explore the Strandveld 4x4 Route. This route goes inland to white sand dunes formed by the Atlantic Ocean on an ancient beach. This trail crosses very challenging dunes. Minimum of 8 persons are required for departure on these 4x4 trails. If less persons, clients have to pay the balance of R148-20 per person per trail.

Continue during the afternoon to Hondeklip Bay, which relies for its survival on a small crayfish industry and a few diamond boats operating from its harbour. This small remote seaside village has an unpretentious rural charm.

DAY 07 01 Jan 12/ 08 Jan 12 Hondeklip Bay – Caracal 4x4 Trail - Groenriviersmond

Visit the wrecks of the Jahleel in the bay and the Aristea south of the town. Continue south on the Coastal section of the Caracal 4x4 Trail to Groenriviermond. The trail runs through impressive West Coast landscapes of the Namaqua National Park with excellent photographic and bird watching opportunities, including seeing the endangered black oystercatcher. Stop at the Spoegrivier Caves and at the estuary where the Spoegrivier mouths in the cold Atlantic Ocean. Afternoon at leisure at Groenriviersmond.

Overnight: Groenriviersmond (Chalet optional at own cost)

DAY 08 02 Jan 12/ 09 Jan 12 Departure

Depart on dirt road to Garies on the N7. Self drive clients continue to their destinations. Clients on guided tour continue to Upington via Springbok. End of the tour.

Kalahari Tours and Travel owns two Guest Houses, Mazurka Waters B&B***and De Duine B&B*** in Upington. Both Guest Houses are situated in the eastern suburb Keidebees and are 400m apart. Kalahari Tours and Travel operates our tours from Mazurka Waters B&B***. We have 10 en-suite units and rooms. We provide free transfers for our clients to the business area, bus station and airport.

Our net rates are: Single B&B R 400-00 – R 480-00 per person

Double & Sharing B&B R 500-00 – R 650-00 per room or unit

CLIENTS NEED:

A list with basic equipment needed on tour will be forwarded to clients who book on the tour.
