PUMP SYSTEM O&M

(DRAFT)

Overview of Water Distribution System to Main Storage Tanks

Note 1: New Tank and smaller existing tank will now be called Tank 4 and Tank 5 respectively. New features in dashed boxes.

Note2: In this diagram a cistern is shown beside the booster pump.

SECTION 1.0 Pumping System Operation Overview

Figure 1: Pumping System Overview (From left to right: 60HP Booster Pump Panel, 15 HP Submersible Pump Panel and New VFD Panel)

The pumping system consists of a 15 HP submersible pump and a 60 HP booster pump. Control of the submersible pump is by an across the line motor starter. Control of the booster pump is by a variable frequency drive which provides a soft start and a variable speed for pumping to the main storage tanks at different elevations. The booster pump will run at full speed when pumping to the upper storage tank and at a reduced set speed when pumping to the lower storage tank.

There are two modes of operation available with this system: Manual and Automatic. Automatic operation uses level control with switches located in the cistern, with an option to run with or without a preset timer.

The following figures are pictures of the front of the submersible pump and booster pump panels respectively. The next sections will reference these figures and will provide step by step procedure to run the pumps in either Manual or Automatic.

Figure 2b: Modified Booster Pump Panel (In the picture shown below the system is set for manual operation to fill the upper "alta" tank.)

SECTION 2.0 Manual Operation (Please reference Figures 1 and 2a/b)

During manual operation water level control in the cistern is not active.

1.  On the front of the booster pump panel (See Figure 2b) is a “TANQUE SELECT” switch. Select either “ALTA” for the upper elevation tanks or “BAJAR” for the lower elevation tanks.

2.  Locate three position switch on submersible pump panel (See Figure 2a MANUAL-OFF-AUTO). Select “MANUAL”. Please note, when the submersible pump mode selector switch is in the “OFF” position the pump will not run.

3.  Locate three position switch on booster pump panel (See Figure 2b MANUAL-OFF-AUTO). Select “MANUAL”. Please note, when the booster pump mode switch is in the “OFF” position the pump will not run.

4.  Press green button located beneath the three position switch on the submersible pump panel to start pump. (A green indicating light will turn on.)

5.  Press the green “START” (marked as Encender(manual)) button located beneath the three position switch on the booster pump panel to start the booster pump. (A green indicating light “MARCHA” will turn on.)

6.  To stop operation of the booster pump press the red “STOP” button located directly beneath the green “START” button.

7.  To stop operation of the submersible pump, press the red button located directly beneath the green start.

Please note, during operation a red indicating light will illuminate to show when the booster pump drive is faulted.

SECTION 3.0 Automatic Operation (Please reference Figures 1 and 2a/b)

Automatic allows the system to run continuously until manually halted. There are two level controls located in the cistern beside the booster pump which are active when in automatic. One level control is for controlling the submersible pump to ensure it stops on a high level to prevent overfilling. The second level control is for the booster pump to ensure it stops if the cistern water level is low to prevent the booster pump from running the cistern empty. A yellow indicating light “BAJO NIVEL” on the booster panel will illuminate.

A second feature to the automatic operation is the “timer” or recommended “off-peak mode.” This is provided to run the pumps in automatic for a set time period when electrical rates are lower.

Procedure for Automatic Operation Without Timer

Select “AUTO”.

3.  Locate three position switch on booster pump panel (See Figure 2b MANUAL-OFF-AUTO). Select “AUTO”.

4.  Locate “AUTO SELECT” switch located on right hand side of booster pump panel. Select “NORMAL.”

5.  Press green button located beneath the three position switch on the submersible pump panel to start pump. (A green indicating light will turn on.)

6.  Press the green “BAJA DEMAND INCIAR” button located on the right hand side of the booster pump panel to start in automatic mode. (A green indicating light “BAJA DEMANDA MARCHA” will turn on.)

7.  To stop operation of the booster pump press the red “BAJA DEMANDA DETENER” located on the right hand side of the booster pump panel.

8.  To stop operation of the submersible pump, press the red button located directly beneath the green start.

Please note, during operation a red indicating light will illuminate to show when the booster pump drive is faulted.

Procedure for Automatic Operation WithTimer

To run in the "off peak/automatic" mode both pumps must be in automatic and the selector switches must be in "auto" position, before starting operation.

Select “AUTO”.

3.  Locate three position switch on booster pump panel (See Figure 2b MANUAL-OFF-AUTO). Select “AUTO”.

4.  Locate “AUTO SELECT” switch located on right hand side of booster pump panel. Select “BAJO/RELOJ/TIMER.”

7.  Operation will halt at preset time. For emergency stop press the red “BAJA DEMANDA DETENER” located on the right hand side of the booster pump panel.

8.  For emergency stop of the submersible pump, press the red button located directly beneath the green start.

Please note, during operation a red indicating light will illuminate to show when the booster pump drive is faulted.

SECTION 4.0 Booster Pump Control Backup

Control of the booster pump is by the variable frequency drive. If the drive fails the booster pump can be run by the old soft start controller. In order to run from the soft start wires in the control enclosures must be changed as shown on the schematics.

The following 24 volt wires must be moved to the adjacent terminal: 24C, 24+, 221

The following 120 volt wires must be moved to the adjacent terminal: 120V, 201, 251, 281

The following 480 volt wires must be moved to the adjacent terminal: (Inputs) 2L1, 2L2, 2L3, (Outputs) T1, T2, T3

For control wires, simply shift wires down to transition from VFD to across the line starter.
