The nominee must meet the following criteria:

 Must have earned an undergraduate or graduate degree from the institution

 Outstanding achievement in their professional, civic or community activities
 Member of the Virginia Union University National Alumni Association (VUUNAA)
 Young Alumni (must have graduated from institution within the last 15 years or is under the age of 40)
 Distinguished service and contributions to their alma mater over the past 5 years

The notable contributions of the nominee should be reflected in the Awards and Recognition section of the nomination form. Additionally, community service and professional activities should be detailed and prominent in the reference section of the nomination form.

The selected alumni will be honored at the Homecoming VUUNAA Business Meeting during the Carol Smith McCall Awards Ceremony. The Alumnus of the Year and the Young Alumnus of the Year will also receive tickets to all Homecoming alumni events and one night’s stay in the host hotel for homecoming.

As recipients of these two awards, the winners will be nominated for the UNCF Outstanding Alumnus/Outstanding Young Alumnus Awards. This prestigious UNCF alumni award recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to their alma mater, their community or UNCF. The Outstanding Alumnus/Outstanding Young Alumnus Hall of Honor Award is presented each year at the Annual Conference to an alumnus selected by their University. Alumni who are selected by their respective universities will be expected to attend the NAC Leadership Conference in February to receive the NAC Outstanding Alumni Award if selected.

The VUUNAA Awards Committee will review all nominations and make the final decision. Qualified applicants will receive a numerical rating based on the responses to the questions applicable to this award. These responses must be submitted along with any supporting documentation. Applicants who do not respond to the application questions may be rated ineligible.
