Outline of Duties
Job Title: Rendering Operative
Responsible To: Production Manager
Department: Dungannon Proteins /
Responsibilities include:

1.  Raw Materials Intake – Standards or performance are met when:

(a)  all operational procedures are being followed.

(b)  The area is kept free from any obstructions and kept clean and tidy.

(c)  To check computer screen, that there are no faults.

(d)  Any faults to be reported and rectified.

2.  Blood Tank Area – Standards of performance are met when:

(a)  The operator ensures that the pump to the blood tank is working and kept in good condition, blood filters are cleaned once per day and when required

(b)  The operator must check computer screen to see any faults related to the blood tank, maximum 20 Tonne.

(c)  Must rectify any problems with pump immediately.

(d)  To follow any Health and Safety/Hygiene procedures.

3.  Batch Cookers – Standards of performance are met when:

(a)  To ensure that machine is operating

(b)  To check pressure gauge

(c)  To ensure that the right level of temperature is reached and to monitor it.

(d)  When cycle has finished, check if the meal is properly cooked.

(e)  If operating manually please ensure that you follow all Health and Safety procedures.

(f)  To continuously check that the computer has no faults leading to the machine.

(g)  To ensure that the crusher and that the buffers are both in good working order.

(h)  To follow all Health and Safety/Hygiene Regulations

(i)  Front and back kept clean

4.  Continuous Cooker / Press / Buffer – Standards of performance are met when:

(a)  To ensure that the machines are operational

(b)  To ensure the correct temperature is maintained and if not it must be reported immediately.

(c)  To check that the press cake is suitable for milling.

(d)  To ensure that the Oil content has no solids in it.

(e)  To check computer for any mal-functions

(f)  To follow all Health and Safety/Hygiene regulations.

5.  Milling Area – Standards of performance are met when:

(a)  The operator is to check the magnet on grinder

(b)  Keep area clean and tidy at all times. No water to be used in this area.

(c)  When sampling, wear gloves, and check for variance in particle sizes.

(d)  Variance in particle sizes mean that the screen has a problem and needs replaced.

(e)  To check with computer if any faults and rectify immediately.

(f)  To follow all Health and Safety/Hygiene Regulations.

6.  Header and Vapour Drain – Standards of performance are met when;

(a)  The operator needs to clean the header once a day

(b)  The operator cleans the Vapour lines leading to the header, once per week.

(c)  The operator needs to drain away any excess from the header and clean it out, including underneath the header and Vapour Line.

(d)  Any problems with the header or Vapour Lines need to be reported immediately.

(e)  To check computer to ensure any faults are corrected effectively

(f)  To follow all Health and Safety/Hygiene regulations.

7.  Despatch – standards of performance are met when:

(a)  Correct meal is distributed to the lorry, and ensuring the correct weight is applied.

(b)  Ensure that the meal bins are properly maintained.

(c)  Ensure that the meal is weighed to correct specification.

(d)  Ensure that the correct amount of fat goes to the tanker.

(e)  Ensure that 4 samples are taken from every load, 4 off the Meal and 4 off the fat. At various times through loading 1 start, 2 during, 1 end.

(f)  To check computer for any faults to ensure that they are managed effectively.

(g)  To follow all Health and Safety/ Hygiene regulations.

8.  Magnets – Standards of performance are met when:

(a)  Regular checks on magnets to be carried out throughout shift

(b)  Ensure the magnets are working correctly and to report any faults immediately.

(c)  Please ensure that the handrails are used

9.  Tallow Tanks: Standards of performance are met when:

10.  Thermal Oxidiser – Standards of performance are met when:

(a)  Regular checks on HFO oil level per shift

(b)  If machine trips out, reset; if it fails to reset, then report to maintenance, or S.A.B.S.

(c)  Ensure that the correct temperature is maintained; (this information is on the computer).

(d)  To follow all Health and Safety/Hygiene regulations.

(e)  Any defects or faults need to be reported immediately.

11.  Computer – Standards of performance are met when:

(a)  Regular checks to be conducted through out the shift

(b)  Any faults that appear on the screen need to be rectified, and all machines need to be reset.

(c)  If a problem persists the supervisor / manager needs to be informed.

12.  Any other duties that are required

Reporting Relationships/Social Conditions:

The job of rendering operative involves ensuring that the Proteins plant is kept operational and that all requirements are met, and any faults are to be reported and rectified. They will be required to work as part of a small team in the rendering plant.

A clean as you work routine is required and any spillages must be cleaned up immediately and reported to the follow on shift.

Physical Conditions:

The job is performed mainly indoors in varying degrees of light and heat. The nature of the job demands contact with greasy/dirty substances and sometimes within close proximity of poultry entrails, meat and other substances. It also involves extensive periods on foot.

Competencies, Knowledge and Experience required:

-  Fit and healthy

-  Ability to read and write and numerate to basic secondary level desirable

-  Previous experiences in a similar role desirable

-  Food hygiene qualification desirable

-  Able to communicate, read and write in English

-  Good manual dexterity and mechanical aptitude essential

-  Data recording experience / computer skills desirable

-  Able to cope with routine work

-  Positive attitude to work and others

-  Able to work as a member of a team.

Health and Safety Responsibilites:

·  Take reasonable care the Health and Safety of yourself and others who may be affected by your actions.

·  Work in a safe manner and observe the Company Health and Safety Rules and Procedures.

·  Use the protective clothing and equipment provided.

·  Report to your Line Manager any incidents that have led to or could have led to injury or an accident or have affected the environment.

·  Report all injuries promptly that occur to your self at work and obtain the necessary first aid treatment.

·  Cooperate with Managers and other personnel of the Company to achieve a healthy and safe workplace environment.

·  Help in the investigation of accidents in order to prevent recurrence.

·  Observe the Company personal hygiene requirements.

·  Set an example of safe, correct behaviour, particularly to new entrants and young persons.

·  Report any hazard / defect you may observe promptly to your immediate line manager.

·  Report any shortcomings in systems of work or procedures to your line manager.

·  Not to interfere with or misuse anything provided in the interests of health, safety and welfare or yourselves or your work colleagues.

·  To comply with safe systems of work at all times

·  To advise managers when not trained for tasks you are being asked to carry out.

Any employee breaching employee health and safety responsibilities will be liable for investigation which may result in disciplinary action in accordance with the Company’s disciplinary policy.
