Dear Parent/Carer

As you know your child is studying GCSE Geography and 25% of the final grade is made up of coursework. This year we are going to do a River study with the Geography candidates.Your child’s attendance on this trip is a compulsory part of their GCSE course. Any students who do not attend the field trip risk having to catch up the fieldwork in their own time without staff support.

We will be taking your child’s Geography group out on either Monday 25th, Wednesday 27thor Friday 29th April from 8.25 am until approx. 4pm and students will need to make their own way home. We will be studying how Littlebeck (a small stream near Whitby) changes as it goes downstream and meets the River Esk.

The students will be recording various aspects of the river such as the width, depth and velocity as well as producing field sketches and looking at sediment size and shape.

Students will need warm, waterproof clothing including a waterproof jacket as we will be outside all day and the trip will not be cancelled in the event of rain. They will need some wellies as they will have to go into the stream itself to collect the data. Jeans are not to be worn as students will be in the stream and jeans will hold the water if they get wet. They will also need to bring a packed lunch. Clipboards and recording equipment will be provided but they will need a bag with writing equipment in.

We will travel to and from the beck near Whitby in a coach as a result the students will need to bring in £5 to cover the cost of hiring the buses.

For your child to be able to attend please complete the permission slip below and return it to me at school together with £5, in a named envelope, before Thursday, 24th March 2016. If you have not already returned the medical form sent to you by Mr McCluskie at the beginning of the academic year, please return it with the slip below. Without this form your child will not be able to participate in the fieldwork and they risk losing 25% of their grade. If you have returned your child’s form but the medical details have changed please inform us of the changes.
