Mechanic. Role description and application form. /

Our current mechanic is in the process of moving to England, so we’re looking to recruit his successor.

Hours are flexible, and negotiable to suit your circumstances. It is envisaged that this would be a part-time post, approx. 10 – 30 hours per week. However there might be scope for more hours if desired, undertaking other activities. Attractive remuneration, commensurate with experience and ability. We can either employ you through our payroll, or if you’re self-employed we can do it on that basis, whichever you prefer.

You’ll be based at our vehicle workshop at 5a Gremista Industrial Estate, Lerwick. We provide all tools, equipment, PPE etc. You’ll be primarily responsible for the maintenance of our fleet of vehicles, larger items of plant, and workshop equipment. We also trade as Shetland Radiator Repairs – you would in due course work with the radiators as well (training will be provided for that).

There’s also the option to take on maintenance of some or all of our smaller plant (e.g. strimmers), and/or maintenance of electrical items, depending on your skillset. Our smaller machinery is currently serviced and repaired by one of our other staff (also an engineer), who will be able to coach and instruct you as required.

We use a database, “ToolFleet”, to log and schedule the maintenance of our assets. ToolFleet is currently mostly updated by one of our crew, but we’ll show you how to use it, and ideally you’d be able to log your own work directly into the system.

Essential / Desirable
Full driving license. / License to tow trailers, experience driving large vehicles and plant.
Skilled, highly competent vehicle mechanic, able to work unsupervised. / Experience maintaining hydraulic systems, plant and machinery.
Able to keep detailed records of work done. / Able to use a computer to search for and log information.
Able to work safely, and help to update and create risk assessments for your activities. / Able to fully manage the safety systems connected with the workshop (including the radiator repairs).
Recommend and apply principles of preventive maintenance where appropriate. / Be willing to respond to emergency calls “out of hours” once in a blue moon.
Be able to estimate costs involved in repairs within reasonably reliable margins, and present options giving consideration to short-term and long-term outcomes. / Strong “commercial awareness”, i.e. understand the business case for the likes of investing in newer or better machinery / tools / vehicles, vs. time spent on repairs and parts, and be able to make decisions or suggestions in this regard.
Able to inspect and assess the integrity and safety of workshop machinery etc. / Strong work ethic.
Work well with others.
Honesty and integrity.
Tenacious approach to problem-solving, good attention to detail.
