Paper Formatting:

  • MLA formatting. See “Big Book” examples and guidelines. MLA includes heading, header, spacing, font, proper research paper title, citations, and Works Cited page (does NOT count toward word count).
  • Use “How to Write a Literary Analysis Essay” if you need reminders on writing literary analysis.
  • Use “Golden Ticket Items” to review work at every phase in the drafting process.

Use of Sources:

Secondary Sources: In discussing your text, you must use and cite three required secondary sources. Use a BALANCE of source material. Secondary source material should consist NO MORE than 30% of your paper. ALL secondary source material must be integrated either through paraphrased evidence or direct quotes of NO MORE than 7 words (no freestanding quotes). Remember that your sources are there to help you develop and extend your argument or position. They are NOT just there to prove existing ideas.

Primary Source: In discussing your text, you must cite the text using paraphrased or directly quoted evidence. See the handout, “In Text Quotation of Poems and Plays in MLA Style” for proper MLA citation of verse dramas. You may cite NO MORE than 2 lines inside a paragraph (in-text citation), and are allowed ONE long quote (block quote) of 4 lines maximum.
