OT / NT Exercise for Matthew 5.43-48NAME:

To find references or allusions to the Old Testament in a New Testament text, your first step is to look in the outside margin of the Greek text in your NET Bible.

  • What references to an OT text do you find listed in Matthew 5.43-48?
    for v43: Lv 19,18 Dt 23,4.7; 7,2
    for v44: Lv 19,34
Why are some of the references italicized?regarded to be quotes and not just allusions
  • Now look where else there might be a reference to the Leviticus passage cited in v43 in the “Loci Citati vel Allegati” in Appendix IV starting on page 772 of the NET Bible.
    What other NT referencesare listed for this OT verse?Mt 5,43; 19,19; 22,39 Mc 12,31.33; L 10,27 R 12,19; 13,9 G 5,14 Jc 2,8
  • In Matthew 5.43, Jesus seems to imply that Scripture says you are to “hate your enemy.” Does the Scripture ever say that? I.e., what do the Scriptural references mentioned for this phrase in v43 suggest? [The verse numbers cited in Deuteronomy are for the Hebrew text. Note that they are sometimes one off from the English versions numbering.]no admission to assembly, no peace, no mercy
  • Looking at the Scripture reference cited for Matthew 5.44, is Jesus being totally originally in saying we should love our enemies? “The alien who resides with you shall be to you as the citizen among you; you shall love the alien as yourself, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God.” Lev 19.34
