Oscar

Oscar was in the fourth grade at New Haven Elementary. He loved going to school every day. His most favorite time of the day was right after recess. His teacher let him and his classmates choose any book they wanted, and they read for thirty minutes. Oscar loved to read books more than anything. If he could, he would read from the time he woke up in the morning until bedtime. Sometimes, Oscar tried to read during dinnertime, but usually, his mom made him put his book away.

Oscar’s parents loved that Oscar enjoyed reading, but they worried about him not doing much else. They decided that it was time for Oscar to put away his book, for a little while.

“Where are we going?” Oscar asked his mom, as he helped her carry a cooler outside. She and his dad were busy packing up the car with a tent, sleeping bags, and other gear.

“We are going camping for the weekend, son,” Oscar’s mom answered. “You need to run upstairs and pack a bag.”

“That sounds like so much fun!” Oscar was excited. He had never been camping before. He had read many books about camping though.

“Oh, and son?” Oscar’s mom called out after him. “No books this weekend. Your dad and I have lots of other things we are going to do.”

Oscar’s smile faded. He did not know what he was going to do without books for a whole weekend. Upstairs, he filled a bag with his clothes, a toothbrush, and shoes, but he left all of his books at home, just like his mother had asked.

Oscar and his parents left on their camping trip. It turned out that Oscar’s mom was right. There were so many fun things to do during their camping trip. They went fishing and swimming in the lake and hiking in the woods. Oscar did not even miss his books.

When Oscar got home from the camping trip, he thought about reading one of the books in his room, but something felt different. Oscar realized that there were other things that he enjoyed doing too. Instead of running upstairs to read, he asked his dad to play basketball in the driveway. Oscar still loved to read, but there were a lot of other things he wanted to try out too.
