QUEEN VICTORIA RALLY SAT 20TH May 2017.

Osborne Bay - Isle of Wight

ORGANISATION and OBJECTIVES: This is a short rally, just 5 miles from Calshot to Osborne Bay, East of Cowes, Isle of Wight. We estimate itwill take around two hours. It is ideal for families with older children and for Wayfarer sailors who have not sailed on the sea before. We welcome experienced crews to help, all Wayfarers will anchor inOsborne Bay on arrival.

If you are not very experienced at anchoring, don’t worry, Mat and John will demonstrate at the briefing before departure.

NOTE-There is no safety boat. You will be sailing in company and help will be at hand if you need it. Rally instructions are sent on VHF Channel 8.

Please remember to display your parking permit to prevent a fine !

OSBOURNE BAY.

Osborne bay is on the North east Coast of the Isle of Wight to the East of Cowes, it makes a perfect lunch stop at anchor and can provide spectacular views of sailing at its finest. We will anchor close to other Wayfarers in this idyllic bay. The sea bed is a mixture of mud and sand and offers good holding. It is very popular in the summer but it is a large anchorage and there is plenty of room for all of us.

Osborne Bay is overlooked by Osborne House, Queen Victoria’s summer residence. The house was built between 1845 & 1851 as a summer house and rural retreat. The beach is where Queen Victoria and her husband Prince Albert swam. It is a fairly sheltered but the beach is private and as such,no landing is permitted. We intend to anchor in shallow water, about 3.8 mtrs. You will be able to see the original bathing hut that Queen Victoria swam from.

Kit Required: This is a rally aimed at beginners on the sea, don’t go to ANY expense.

Minimum kit list

Anchor and rope in a bucket (You may be able to borrow one from us).

Bucket doubles as a bailer

Paddles/oars

There are other items you might want to bring eg masthead flotation, outboard motor, VHF radio, flares, First Aid kitchart (eg Admiralty 5600.9)
