Welcome

We would like to welcome you to the Orthopaedic Outpatient Department, Perth Royal Infirmary. We hope that you will enjoy your placement here and that you will quickly feel part of the team. We will assign you a mentor who will guide you through your placement. The remaining trained nurses will provide team mentoring and will contribute to your assessment. You will be able to discuss your learning outcomes and times will be arranged for further progress meetings.

Your working hours will be 0830 - 1700 Monday to Thursday and 0830-1430 on Friday. You may be asked to alter these slightly for your participation and learning in various clinics / settings.

There is a cafeteria nearby for dining, but you are welcome to bring a packed lunch.

As with all NHS Tayside Hospitals, Perth Royal Infirmary has a no smoking policy in place.

Should you be unable to attend work please telephone one of the above numbers after 8am and ask to speak to the nurse in charge.

Prior to your return please telephone one of the above numbers no later than 4pm the day before.

The University of Dundee will be notified, by the department, of student sick absences. Please remember to contact the university yourself as per current guidelines.

Most casting is carried out in the plaster room, however you may also have the opportunity to attend theatre and A & E.

You will experience multidisciplinary team working and hopefully feel this clinical setting is a worthwhile learning environment.

Learning opportunities available

There are many learning opportunities within Orthopaedic Outpatients. Patients range in age from new born to very elderly, come from varied and diverse backgrounds. Thus you will require to develop adaptive communication skills.

You will be given the opportunity to assist with clinics.

·  You will gain knowledge of the science of orthopaedics, including the management and treatment of deformities, injuries and diseases of bones and joints.

·  You will observe doctors viewing and interpreting x-rays through PACS (Picture Archiving and Communications System).

·  You will be given the opportunity to work within the plaster room which will allow you to gain an understanding of cast application and management.

·  You may have the opportunity to attend theatre to observe orthopaedic surgery.

·  You may also be given the opportunity to work on one of the orthopaedic wards with the physiotherapist in order to gain a full insight into the care and management of the orthopaedic patient before, during and after surgery.

·  This multidisciplinary team working will develop and enhance your communication skills.

·  You will develop an understanding of the principles surrounding therapeutic relationship building as you work within the clinic setting.

You will have the opportunity to learn about the principles of wound management, different types of dressings, bandaging, and reduction of cross infection and safe disposal of clinical waste. This will link in to your cleanliness champion training.

·  You will develop an awareness of how to manage patients with MRSA within the clinic setting

·  You will learn about the safe manual handling of patients within a clinic setting.

·  There is a wide range of learning resources available.

·  Transferable Skills:

·  Enhanced communication skills

·  Observation and reporting of physical and psychological state of patients to appropriate person.

·  Implementation and evaluation of care.

·  Aseptic technique.

·  Wound assessment and management.

·  Appropriate intervention e.g bacteriology swab, dressing choice

·  Removal of clips and sutures.

·  Secondary dressings/ bandaging.

The hospital library is situated in the main corridor in the old part of the hospital. This is part of the University of Dundee’s library and you require your library card to withdraw books.
