Orthopaedic Curriculum for Students

1.  Outline for the month given to the student at the beginning of the rotation

2.  Assignments

  1. 3rd and 4th year students will meet every morning at 6:30 in the residents’ room (academic office) to look over the patient list and to update the labs.
  2. Students will be assigned to the different services (one student per service).

3.  Rotations

  1. 1 week: Trauma (Dr. Ebraheim)
  2. 1 week: Sports (Dr. Levine and Dr. Sohn)
  3. 1 week: Spine and Joints (Dr. Lai/Dr. Elgafy and Dr. Khan)

4.  1 week: Hand and Foot and Ankle (Dr. Skie/Dr. Mustapha)

5.  Basic Lectures

  1. Musculoskeletal Examination (Chief Resident)
  2. Casting and Splinting/Injection Techniques (Chief Resident)
  3. Neurological Examination (Dr. Elgafy)
  4. Open Fractures (Chief Resident)
  5. Upper Extremity Fractures (Chief Resident)
  6. Lower Extremity Fractures (Chief Resident)

6.  Fracture lecture and handout given by Dr. Ebraheim on Fridays

7.  Rotations in the Orthopaedic Department

  1. Clinic
  2. Interview process and physical examination
  3. Hands on Immobilizations and injections or procedures done in clinic
  4. OR
  5. 2nd assistant in surgery helping in procedures
  6. Hands-on basic procedures
  7. Improve surgical skills (suture techniques)
  8. Floor
  9. Assign a patient (1 or 2) a week during particular rotation
  10. Write notes
  11. Follow-up and plan
  12. Dressing changes
  13. ER
  14. Follow the resident on call and help him with the on-call duties

8.  Conferences

  1. X-ray conference (every Wednesday from 7:30 to 8:30 am)
  2. Grand Rounds (once a month)
  3. Resident lectures (every Thursday from 5:00 to 7:00 pm)

Both conferences are mandatory for 3rd and 4th year students
