Artfare Essentials

What is it?

  • An introduction to the principles, practices and underpinnings of art that engages with and creates community,
  • Everything (or many things!) you need to know to start your own community arts project,
  • An orientation to future work, internships or micro-grant projects with Jumblies,
  • A coming-together of artists, cultural workers and others interested in community-engaged from Toronto, across Canada and abroad, of varied ages, experiences and backgrounds.
  • An integrated mixture of presentation, discussion, hands-on activity, creative exploration, site visits, take-home resources,
  • A stimulating, fun, inspirational, thought-provocative, immersive 6-day experience.

Topics include:

  • Definitions & guiding principles
  • Project planning
  • Partnerships
  • Research (e.g. arts and story-based)
  • Facilitation
  • Aesthetics and ethics
  • Interdisciplinary collaborations
  • Working across diversities (age, culture, class, abilitiy)
  • Conflicts and challenges
  • History of Jumblies, Offshoots, community arts
  • Evaluation and documentation
  • Legacy and sustainability

Facilitators: Ruth Howard (Artistic Director of Jumblies) with Jumblies Offshoot Associates and other guest presenters and co-facilitators.

Cost: full fee $300 with sliding-scale and work-trade options.

Accommodation: For out of town registrants, we can help you find free or affordable billets.

Meals: First lunch, Coffee/tea and snacks provided, otherwise bring or buy your own.
Certification: Attendees will receive a certificate of completion from the Jumblies Studio.
Artfare Essentials is an orientation for Jumblies interns, and recommended for Jumblies’ Platform A Grant recipients. The workshop is also respected in Toronto and across Canada as a qualification for community arts employment and funding.
