PLEASE PASS ON TO RELEVANT AREAS WITHIN YOUR AIRLINE/ORGANIZATION THAT DEAL WITH FLIGHT SAFETY, HUMAN FACTORS, OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH & SAFETY

Dear Sir/Madam,
We have been asked by many organizations/individuals for information relating to the following publication. The ongoing high public profile of the issue of flight safety and human adverse effects related to aircraft air contaminated by oil fumes has led to an increased request for information regarding what data is available.
TheAviation Contaminated Air Reference Manual 'Information is the only collated source of fully referenced data on the issue of aircraft contaminated air. We have attached the Australian RAAF review of the 844 page reference manual for your convenience.
Additionally it has been brought to our attention that the Swiss Air Accident Investigation Bureau has published a key report on this issue clearly stating:

  • The serious incident is attributable to the fact that .....the cockpit filled with fumes which caused a toxic effect, leading to a limited capability of acting of the copilot.
  • These fumes were caused by an oil leak...
  • The medical examination of the copilot after the flight showed that during the flight toxic exposure took place.

The report can be found at:
Federal Department of Environment, Transport
Energy and Communications No. u1884
Investigation Report by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau
concerning the serious incident to aircraft AVRO 146-RJ 100, HB-IXN operated by Swiss International Air Lines Ltd. under flight number LX1103 on 19 April 2005

As an individual or organization which needs to have the latest data available on the issue of aircraft contaminated bleed air and the subsequent effects on aircraft cabin safety and crew OH&S, we are the world wide distributor for the Aviation Contaminated Air Reference Manual which has quickly been accepted as the leading database of factually sourced information on this subject matter specifically dealing with contamination due to oil and hydraulic fluid leakage.
Details on the fully sourced and extremely comprehensive manual are listed below.
The author as many of you may know has been researching the issues surrounding specifically bleed air contamination for over a decade, is undertaking a PhD in this subject at the University of New South Wales in Australia and has published numerous papers on the issues involved. Additionally she is the head researcher for the Global Cabin Air Quality Executive (GCAQE).
The contaminated air issue on aircraft is one that unions, regulators, airlines, manufacturers and Air Accident Investigators can not afford to ignore. Aircraft safety and real health and safety issues are extensively documented in the manual which are continuing to date as evidenced by the

Reviews:
The manual is...'ground-breaking and seminal work'.... RAAF Institute of Aviation Medicine
Over recent years, there have been reports of pilots, flight attendants and passengers evacuated to hospitals after breathing contaminated air in the airplane. A typical investigation, such as this one involving a B757, reads, 'After engine start, the crew were aware of an unusual odor in the cockpit and both started to feel unwell. Investigation suggested that a suspected oil leakage in the left engine may have been responsible for the smell.'Oftentimes, it's more than a bad smell; it's debilitating. This excellent book outlines why the air in the cockpit or cabin becomes contaminated, with what the air was fouled, and what can be done about it."
David Evans - Editor of Air Accident Digest ( )
A reference manual that clearly demonstrates contaminated air is serious flight safety and health issue. Most pilots and aviation employees lack the knowledge and facts needed to understand the serious threat contaminated air can be. This reference manual is a must read for anyone employed in aviation.
Captain Colin Barnet-Higgins
An internationally accepted definition of aircraft airworthiness is compliance with all the applicable legal requirements / regulations. These requirements include the appropriate Design Standards applicable to the particular aircraft. Non compliance with these requirements render an aircraft unairworthy. The facts presented in this book demonstrate the requirements, applicable to clean air in a number of identified aircraft types, are not being met which cause the aircraft to be a danger to person and property. Such non-conformance requires urgent review.
Dick Best, Former CASA Airwothiness Officer
Contaminated air is a serious occupational and public health issue which could be easily addressed if there was a collective will to do so. This reference manual clearly shows there is enough evidence to warrant action.
