Returning Orientation Leader Overview

Returning Orientation Leaders (ROLs)will serve as teachers and role models, assisting with facilitating activities, mentoring, and providing feedback to new team members. This is a wonderful opportunity for you to continue to learn, serve, and grow by working with faculty, staff, and incoming students and their families as the University of Illinois Springfield welcomes a new first-year class.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Office of New Student Orientation & Parent Relations (NSOPR) at the University of Illinois Springfield is to assist new students with their transition to the university’s academic, social, and cultural community through purposeful programs, services, and resources that will provide a foundation for student success and retention. NSOPR also serves families of new and current students with programs and resources that will help them understand and provide support for their student’s initial transition to college all the way through to graduation.

Goals of Orientation

  • to assist new students, their parents, and family members in becoming acclimated to the University;
  • to assist new students in learning about the academic program, policies, and faculty expectations of students;
  • to assist new students in learning about various services and resources on campus;
  • to assist new students, their parents, and family members in learning about the various aspects of campus life including, traditions, campus activities, and support services;
  • to assist new students in meeting UIS administrators, faculty, and students.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Director, the Graduate Assistant, and SOCs with training;
  • Operate as part of the Office of New Student Orientation & Parent Relations staff and a representative of the University of Illinois Springfield;
  • Perform duties as assigned, help as needed with duties that emerge over the course of NSOPR programming.
  • Provide a welcoming campus experience for new students and their families;
  • Lead an O-Group by facilitating discussions and enhancing the group development process;
  • Be a positive role model for new students, remembering that you are operating as part of The Office of New Student Orientation and Parent Relations and representing the University of Springfield;
  • Check email for updates weekly through the summer and daily during training and Launch Week activities.

Expectations

  • Show enthusiasm for the University of Illinois Springfield and its history as Sangamon State;
  • Promote campus traditions, programs, and services;
  • Encourage new student attendance at activities and events;
  • Advise and assist students with questions and concerns regarding the University and University life;
  • Participate in activities and events with the new students including evenings and Saturday sessions as assigned;
  • Perform all responsibilities in a punctual, reliable, and conscientious manner;
  • Exercise mature judgment, good humor, patience, and flexibility;
  • Be a respectful and considerate team member;
  • Demonstrate commitment to the goals of Orientation and the people we serve; and
  • Observe and reinforce all University of Illinois Springfield policies, and local, state and federal laws.

Requirements

Candidates must…

  • have been employed as an orientation leader on a previous UIS Orientation Team;
  • have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.3 and good academic and disciplinary standing with all UIS communities through the remainder of your commitment with NSOPR;
  • be a currently enrolled Undergraduate student at UIS in the spring 2018 semester and enrolled for fall 2018at UIS;
  • have some knowledge of UIS, its students, academics, campus life, traditions, and history as Sangamon State
  • have a positive attitude toward learning, meeting challenges, thinking creatively, working as a member of a team;
  • be able to meet expectations of Employment Availability: OL training and orientation programs (see Timeline);

Selection

  • Initial screening includes checking grades and standing with the University and a review of your application materials;
  • Individual interview with the Director of NSOPR, GA, and SOC(s).

ROL Salary/Benefits

  • Salary of $9/hour;
  • NSOPR will provide housing in the Summer Conference Hall - $30/day during June and July employment dates, an approximate value of $540, plus cover the $25/day early arrival fee in August, an approximate value of $200;
  • NSOPR will provide meals during Orientation programs and some meals during June, July and August training – an approximate value of $507. Students will be responsible for meals not included in training and Orientation programs;
  • Uniform polos, t-shirts and nametags will be provided – an approximate value of $65. Students will need to provide their khaki pants, shorts or skirts, and suitable footwear (no open-toed sandals, flip-flops, or clogs/mules/slip on shoes).

How to Apply: Returning OLs

  • Students interested in applying for a Returning OL position should review the responsibilities, requirements, expectations, and job descriptions to make sure they are eligible, willing, and able to fulfill them.
  • Complete the Returning OL Application, including answers to the three questions; two letters of recommendation (1) from a member of the 2017 Orientation Team & the other from a Professional UIS staff or faculty member who has worked with you enough to address how you meet the ROL criteria; and a current resume. Submit your most current resume through Career Connect. All materials must be uploaded to Career Connect by 3PM on Wednesday, October 11, 2017.
