PRAYER OF THE DAY
Almighty and everlasting God, give us an increase of faith, hope, and love; and, that we may obtain what you promise, make us love what you command; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
OLD TESTAMENTLESSON:Exodus 6: 2 – 8
“The Lord” is the title that describes God as the God of the covenant…the God of independent and faithful grace. The Lord is more fully known as he fulfills his promise in delivering his people from their enemies, setting them apart for himself, and guiding them to the promised land.
2 God also said to Moses, “I am the LORD. 3 I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob as God Almighty, but by my name the LORD I did not make myself known to them. 4 I also established my covenant with them to give them theland of Canaan, where they lived as aliens. 5 Moreover, I have heard the groaning of the Israelites, whom the Egyptians are enslaving, and I have remembered my covenant.
6 “Therefore, say to the Israelites: ‘I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians. I will free you from being slaves to them, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with mighty acts of judgment. 7 I will take you as my own people, and I will be your God. Then you will know that I am the LORD your God, who brought you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians. 8 And I will bring you to the land I swore with uplifted hand to give to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob. I will give it to you as a possession. I am the LORD.’”

The psalmist invites us to join him in praising God for the care and protection of those who trust in him.
EPISTLELESSON:Romans 11:33 – 36
St. Paul finishes a section that demonstrates how God’s wisdom can turn mankind’s disobedience into an opportunity for mercy. No wonder the apostle breaks forth into a hymn of praise! Who could have though of such a thing? It could only be the unsearchable wisdom of our triune God!
Doxology
33 Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out!
34 “Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been his counselor?” 35 “Who has ever given to God, that God should repay him?” 36 For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be the glory forever! Amen.
VERSE OF THE DAY: Alleluia. Jesus Christ has destroyed death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. Alleluia.
GOSPEL LESSON: Matthew 16: 13 – 20
Human reason cannot consider Jesus to be any more than a prophet – the forerunner of the Messiah at best. But Peter, on behalf of the other disciples, confesses, “You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God.” On this bedrock confession the entire church of God is built. We who are built upon Christ have overcome the dark powers of death. Jesus gave all Christians the authority to proclaim freedom to penitent sinners. Likewise, Christ’s voice is heard through us when we withhold forgiveness from those who proudly insist on their life of sin.
Peter’s Confession of Christ
13 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?”
14 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
15 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”
16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
17 Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven. 18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”
20Then he warned his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Christ.

Bulletins for children are available on the table in the narthex near the nursery door. Use them during the service (they are coordinated with the Sunday Gospel theme) or take them home and share with an unchurched friend or neighbor.)
There are usually quite a few left over
so please take them with you for travel fun.
There are also “quiet bags” filled with appropriate items and activities for children,
on the rack near the nursery door.

Notice of Open Forum:
On Sunday, Sept. 25, St. Paul's and St. Mark congregations will be holding open forums to discuss the pending incorporation of Risen Savior and its new constitution. St. Paul's forum is scheduled for 9:15 AM, and St. Mark's is scheduled for 10:30 AM following its 9 AM service. This will be the same Sunday in which the K-3rd graders are scheduled to sing at St. Mark. The same board presentation will be given at each congregation. Attendance and input will be appreciated at either forum regardless of church membership. All Risen Savior families are invited to attend either forum.
