ORACLE Java6 update 31 FOR UAS, OUCS and OLIS users

1.INTRODUCTION

The purpose of this document is to provide step-by-step instructions to guide users of the managed Windows XP desktop environment in UAS, OUCS and OLISthrough the activation of the Oracle Java Runtime Environment (JRE) plugin component, which is required to connect PCs to the Oracle Student System.

JRE has already been deployed and installed on the managed desktop environment.

2.Overview

2.1What is JRE?

The Java Runtime Environment (JRE) is a version of Sun Computing’s Java Virtual Machine (JVM) that has been certified by Oracle for use with Oracle Forms. Oracle Forms is the main software layer used to read, write and search data in the Oracle Student System and Oracle Financials. JRE replaces JInitiator, which has been used as the JVM for Oracle Student Systems and Oracle Financials until now. The version of JRE to be installed is Java version6 Update 31’). Note that older JVM clients, including JInitiator and earlier versions of JRE, will not work with Oracle Forms.

2.2How does it work?

JRE is an installable Java plug-in that works with recommended web browsers. When the browser accesses an Oracle Forms Server, JRE is called as a plug-in to give the needed additional functionality. This provides a more stable environment in which to run Oracle applications, including enhanced security and caching of static parts of the Forms Server pages to minimise network traffic.

2.3Will it affect other applications or the running of my PC?

The JRE Java plug-in is a completely separate and secure environment, which should have no impact on other applications running on the PC.

3.Check Installation

To confirm that JRE has been installed:

  • Open the Windows Control Panel using Start > Settings > Control Panel
  • Double-click ‘Add or remove programs’
  • Scroll down the alphabetical list of installed programs. You should find an entry for ‘Java (TM) 6 Update 31’:

If you cannot find this entry, please contact the ICTST Helpdesk on .

Close ‘Add or Remove Programs’ and the Control Panel window.
