1. Flygirl Map
On the page provided, answer the questions and complete the map.
2. Characterization Journal
On the page provided, select 3 major characters. Choose 2 quotes for each character that illustrate the most important qualities that they bring to the novel Flygirl(Ex: courage, sense of duty, loyalty, intelligence, etc.). Be sure to explain why each quote is significant.
3. Geographical Journal
On the page provided, select 3 quotes that best exemplify how the geography (setting) affects the plot in Flygirl. Be sure to explain why each quote is significant.
4. Event Ranking
On the page provided,select 3 events that happen in the book. Rank them in order of importance to the story starting with the most important. For each event be sure to thoroughly explain the event and provide at least 3 sentences explaining your justification for the ranking.
5. Epilogue
On a separate sheet of paper, write a post-epilogue of the story about Ida Mae Jones and where she is in her life 5 years later. Your epilogue must include descriptions of Ida Mae’s current relationships with 3 of these characters: Walt, Jolene, Lilly, and/or Thomas. Your epilogue must be at least one page.
7. Flygirl Movie Trailer
Create a 45 second-1 minute “movie trailer” advertising the novel Flygirlas though it is coming to theaters. Be sure your video attempts to persuade the audience to come see the movie.
7. Interview:
On a separate sheet of paper, create an interview between yourself (the interviewers) and 1 of the characters in the book. Make sure to create both the questions, and the character’s response. Make sure there are at least 7 questions and 7 responses.
Example:
Mrs. Perucca:Ida Mae, when did you first become interested in flying planes?
Ida Mae: I have wanted to be a pilot since I was a young girl. My daddy used to let me ride with him and even taught me how to fly. We would fly around spraying the crops to keeps insects away. After he died I loved flying because it reminded me of him. I didn’t fly a lot after the war started, but I’m glad to be flying again.
Reader Response Questions
These response journals will not be summaries. They are your reflections on the book that will assist you in group discussion. Use these questions to help write your reader response. For example, you could pick 1 question from each category, or multiple questions within a category.

Do you notice any changes in the personality of your protagonist or antagonist?
Do you notice any emphasis on an object or minor character that might be important later?
Do you notice any repeating patterns in the book?
Do you notice the significance of the title of the chapter you are reading?
Do you notice anything unusual about the book's beginning or ending?

Do you question any of the decisions that a character has made?
Do you wonder what a certain passage in the book might mean?
Do you question whether the author realistically presented a certain part of your book?
Do you question if something that happened in the author's life might have influenced the writing of this novel?
What do you feel?
Does any part of the book make you feel scared, annoyed, sad, frustrated, or horrified? Which part? Why?
Do you feel differently about a character or situation in the novel now than you felt before?
Why have your feelings changed?
Do you want to read another novel by the same author? Why or Why not?
What do you relate to?
Does anything in the book remind you of something from your own experience, or a movie, or a TV program, a song, or another book your have read? Discuss that relationship.

Flygirl MAP Activity
Directions: Using the attached MAP –
- Choose three (3) main characters from the novel.
- Trace the journey of each character throughout the novel. Be sure to include the character’s home location, all destinations in between, and their final ending location.
- Must be historically accurate – that is, based on the novel, the character must have traveled to/from said location.
- Choose RED, GREEN, and ORANGE to represent each of your characters.
- Label all relevant states and capital cities on your MAP.
- Follow all Map Rules and be sure to include a Map KEY and COMPASS ROSE.
