Advice about entry

1.Consult the website and find the player's rating (R1)

2.Also consult the Junior section of the Welsh Chess Union website to see if the player is already qualified to play in any age group championship.

Then

3.If there is no listing or the R1 rating is under 450 choose the Starter competition

4.If the player is not qualified for any age group championship, choose the lowest rated tournament for which the player is eligible (e.g. for an unqualified player rated 730 choose the Major 850-400 rather than the Premiership 1250-700)

5.If the player is qualified for his/her age group championship, choose the higher of the tournaments for which the player is eligible (e.g. for a 725 player already qualified to play in the U10 championship, choose the Premiership 1250 -700 rather than the Major 850-400 as playing stronger players will be better preparation for the Championship.

6.Choose the Open if you are already qualified for the U10 or U11 Championship and are ambitious to improve your play – or are trying to win a money prize!

We are hoping players from outside Wales will play in these tournaments providing different opposition for Welsh players.

About a week after the event check the two websites mentioned earlier to see if you have qualified as a result of the tournament.

The tournaments are not age related because children's ability depends on a lot more factors than age. It is easily possible to put 100 points onto a rating by being successful in a 6 round tournament, which may happen because of a spurt in interest at any age. Once qualified for the relevant age group championship, playing in higher rated tournaments against more challenging opposition is helpful in improving a player's strength in readiness for the championship, and is also likely to be helpful to a player when we consider selection for county and Welsh teams.
