Cornwall Conservation Commission

Minutes for July 17, 2014 meeting

The meeting was called to order at 6:35 pm. Present were Patrick Mulberry, Nikolle Lizana, Ron Hummel. Cornwall resident and Lakeville Journal Reporter Karen Bartomioli also attended. Joseph Markow and Heidi Cunnick were absent.

Welcoming of new member Nikolle Lizana

Nikolle introduced herself and described her background and interests in environmental issues.

Housatonic River Overlay Zone

Patrick confirmed that the Overlay Zone was approved by the Planning Commission.

Recruitment of New Members

The resignation of Graham Underwood was accepted with regret and acknowledgement of Graham unique contribution will be missed. Discussion then revolved around finding people interested in contributing the commission’s activities. It was agreed that any and all interested parties would be welcome. And that gender, geographic and age diversity would be desirable.

Patrick suggested that perhaps a high school student interested in environmental issues might be willing to participate in commission activities. Karen B. suggested that Karen Davenport or Mark Burdick who run the Environthon group at the high school be contacted for recommendations of possible candidates.

Karen Bartomioli also expressed interest in joining the commission. It was agreed that she would attend the next meeting informally to ‘test the waters’

Other Discussion

Ron H. presented several options for a commission logo designed by Cynthia Weeks. One option was selected with a slight alteration of the moto to CORNALL CONSERVATION COMMISSION “Conservation is Everybody’s Future” (see attached file for preliminary draft of logo)

Ron H. suggested a letter be written to support legislative action to protect state forest lands.

Patrick mentioned that if the commission was interested, that assistance may be requested from the Landscape Architecture Department at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. It was agreed that this topic would be discussed along with the strategic plan.

The meeting adjourned at roughly 7:35pm.
