Spring

SUNY Learning Network (SLN) Course Offering Protocol

In an effort to keep the lines of communication open and develop a common understanding between all parties regarding SLN course offerings, the following protocol has been established.

  • Faculty interested in teaching a SLN course must consult with their chair/director. Critical discussion points should include the appropriateness of offering the specific course fully online (i.e., asynchronously) and whether the course is being offered as part of, or in addition to the instructor's course load for a specific semester. Course overloads must be paid by the department offering the course.
  • SLN courses are taught via the ANGEL platform. First time, SLN instructors receive a one-time, $500 recognition reward for their first SLN course development effort, when their course “Goes Live” and becomes accessible to students, one week prior to the start of class.
  • Department chairs/directors must communicate to their deans, their department's SLN course offering plans. The department chair/director submits SLN course offerings on the course adjustment form (“blue form”) to Janice Stewart, designating “LRNNET” as the course location.
  • Once confirmed with the department chair, the new SLN faculty member sends an e-mail to the SLN Academic Coordinator,Karen Schuhle-Williams (), confirming his/her plans to teach a SLN course for spring.
  • Process Steps: New SLN faculty must complete and submit the following:
  • a) The Hybrid - Online Course Approval Form must form must follow closely, course submission to Registrar and must be signed by the Instructional Design Specialist [IDS] in CELT for course registration to be activated. (Registration & Records will load the course, but block registrations until the IDS-approved form is received by Janice Stewart).

b) The Faculty Information Form must be submitted to Karen Schuhle-Williams, who shares the information with the SLN Support Team members, so they may best assist faculty with course development and the use of (and trouble-shooting challenges with) instructional technology.

  • In the semester prior (i.e., fall) to launching a SLN course, instructors must work with our campus Instructional Design Specialist (IDS), Ann Pearlman in CELT, to develop the entire course, prior to the “Go Live” date. Once the course is developed, faculty may make revisions as the term progresses. In addition to the course development assistance we are fortunate to have the Learning Systems Team(LST), led by Brendan Post, available to help you with ANGEL use and other technical matters. They, along with Mary Jo Orzech (LITS) and Jennifer Little (Drake) are available to assist you as well.
