POST: Move More Eat Well Education Officer- Growing

LOCATION: Home based (Longbridge)with regular visits to Ryton Organic Gardens,

Coventry

REPORTS TO:Head of Education

SALARY: £19,500 - £23,000 pro rata

HOURS: Part time, 14 hours a week (24 month contract Aug17-Aug19)

Holiday to be taken in school holidays.

Garden Organic is looking for an education officer to deliver organic food growing activities to schools across the wards of Longbridge, Cofton, Northfield and Rubery (North and South) in Birmingham.

Background:
Garden Organic is the national charity for organic growing. For over 15 years we have been supporting schools nationally with growing projects. This includes:

  • Delivering training across the UK to teachers and other school professionals;
  • Providing resources and information for schools;
  • Supporting therapy gardening projects to support young people;
  • Working on educational policy at a national/government level;
  • Being a partner in the Food for Life partnership;
  • Visits to our headquarters, Ryton Organic Gardens.

Project Summary:

Move More Eat Well is a programme of free events, support, activities and opportunities to help people feel healthier. It’s all being delivered by Health for Education Service, Garden Organic, Northfield Ecocentre, Sport BirminghamandSustrans. Schools and Communities will be encouraged to ‘Move More’ by taking up active travel, cycle maintenance and tuition classes, volunteering, food growing, sports and active hobbiesand ‘Eat Well’ as a route to feeling healthierby cooking healthily, growing your own fruit and veg and sharing tips.

Specific Duties:

Work with the partners in MMEW to coordinate, promote and deliver the overall aims of the programme. To include:

  • Promoting the benefits of food growing and cooking healthy meals to schools;
  • Communicating with and recruiting schools to the project;
  • Run practical sessions in school growing areas;
  • Provide and produce relevant resources to support delivery of the curriculum and practical organic growing activities;
  • Signpost to local organisations and providers who can support their aims;
  • Raise awareness within the community of school growing and cooking;
  • Facilitate Garden Group meetings in schools to map and maintain progress;
  • Support schools with their fundraising activity for gardens and resources;
  • Provide signposting to supporting providers/services to schools to help them to the next level of achievement in food growing;
  • Provide food growing training for school professionals and community volunteers;
  • Develop and nurture existingschool food growingnetworks across Longbridge, Cofton, Northfield and Rubery (North and South);
  • Developing relationships with stakeholders including businesses and community members who are willing to support the project and schools;
  • Coordinating and developingrelationships/networks/activities with stakeholders in the project - businesses, volunteers, schools and communities;
  • Work with communications team to contribute to Garden Organic publications and communications for schools/communities;
  • Contribute to internal communications within Garden Organic and the project team;
  • Complete all monitoring, evaluation and reporting relating to the project;
  • Provide updates, communication and information to promote and demonstrate the impact of the Move More Eat Well program.
