ONE (1) FULL-TIME POLICE CAPTAIN POSITION

WENHAM POLICE DEPARTMENT

DUTIES: A Police Officer performs law enforcement duties, protecting life, property, and the civil rights of individuals. Primary duties include patrol; interacting with citizens to provide service and render assistance; preparing and completing records, reports, and other paperwork documenting incidents for use in prosecution. A Police Officer is dispatched to crime and emergency scenes in response to reported violations, accidents, domestic disputes and abuses, and other incidents; carries out crime scene duties; makes arrests and performs search and seizure; conducts investigations; and interviews witnesses, suspects, and complainants. THE CAPTAIN IS RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL OF THE ABOVE AND WILL BE THE EXECUTIVE OFFICER FOR THE DEPARTMENT. IN ADDITION, THE CAPTAIN WILL BE THE DEPARTMENT’S PRIMARY COURT OFFICER, ACCREDITATION MANAGER, AND INTERNAL AFFAIRS INVESTIGATOR. ALSO SUCH ADMINSTRATIVE DUTIES INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, BUILDING SECURITY, CJIS REPRESENTITIVE, IT LIASON TO THE RECC, AND THE REGISTRAR TO THE STATE’S SEX OFFENDER REGISTRY. ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

1.Education/Experience Requirement: Applicants must be employed as current Police Officers with the rank of Sergeant or above for longer than 1 year.If no internal candidates apply, or if all internal candidates fail to meet the qualifications or pass the selection process,the position will be reposted and externalcandidates will be considered. Associates Degree in Law Enforcement preferred. As of the date of appointment, applicants must have either:high school diploma or equivalency certificate approved by the Massachusetts Department of Education.

2. Character: No person who has been convicted of a felony shall be appointed as a police officer. A candidate may be disqualified for evidence of character clearly unsuited for police services. The Wenham Police Department conducts a comprehensive background check as part of the selection process.

3. Firearms Permit: A candidate must be able to obtain a valid firearms permit to qualify to be a police officer in Massachusetts.

4. Driver's License: A candidate must have a valid motor vehicle operator's license before appointment.

Assessment Center /Oral Board: Selection Process Overview

Once the posting has expired, the selection process will begin. The Chief and the Town Administratorwill review all of the applications and determine which of them meet the minimum qualifications set forth in the job posting. Those qualified applicants will then be invited to participate in the following steps outlined below. (Subject to change, for which notice will be given.)

1.Applicants will be notified of preliminary selection to participate in interview process.

2.Applicants will participate in an assessment center or oral board with a panel consisting of Chief of Police, Town Administrator and additional members as appropriate.

3.Preferred candidate will be chosen,pendingfinal interview with the Chief of Police.

4.Recommended candidate will engage in contract negotiations with the Board of Selectmen.

5.Recommended candidate will be officiallyappointed to the position by the Board of Selectmen.

The Captain’s position is a salaried position. The incumbent’s compensation package totals $104,809, including a $1,000 accreditation stipend and a $1,500 EMT stipend. Specific terms and conditions of employment for the new hire will be determined pending the successful negotiation of a contract with the Board of Selectmen, with an anticipated starting annual salary of approximately $100,000.
