Currently work in relevant practice for a minimum of 15 hours per week
Have management support and approval to undertake the module and access to a Practice Teacher.

Aims / To enable students to reflect and analyse the clinical decisions that are made in their daily practice.
Learning outcomes/objectives / On successful completion of the module the student will be able to:
1.  Identify, critically analyse and reflect on the following elements of clinical decision making
·  Underpinning epistemology of practice
·  Accountability
·  Ethical perspectives
·  Models of Clinical decision making
·  Relationship between theory and practice
2.  Analyse their professional role within health care delivery and consider the implications of future role developments.
3.  Analyse clinical contexts within which their Clinical decisions are made both from an inter- and intra-professional prospective.
On successful completion of the module, the student will meet the following Specialist Practice Standards as approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council:

Content / Includes:
·  The process and models of reflection
·  Analytical thinking
·  Nature of professional knowledge
·  Cognitive, intuitive and experiential theories of decision making.
·  Relationship between theory and practice
·  Research into clinical decisions.
·  Ethical aspects of clinical decisions
·  Use of evidence in clinical decision making
Students will be required to present clinical dilemmas for discussion within the group. Cases constructed by students that contain salient data for clinical decision making will be explored. Cases will be analysed from both the professional and client perspective. The similarities and differences noted will be discussed and evaluated.
Teaching and learning strategies / Blended teaching and learning strategy involving key note lectures, experiential learning and use of studentcentral. Active student involvement is integral to the discursive nature of this module.

Assessment tasks / 1. Written Assessment Task (50% of overall mark): (2000 words + 10%) All students
Reflective account of a clinical decision with indepth analysis of the rationales and influencing factors involved in the reasoning process. An identified theoretical framework should be used with a clear rationale given for its choice.
2. Practice assessment for Students undertaking CSP and SCPHN courses:
Choose and document an Interprofessional/interdisciplinary clinical decision making situation which highlights a clinical dilemma. Analyse with your Practice Teacher the accountability and ethical dimensions of the situation. Consider what evidence was used to resolve the issue.
In order to achieve an overall pass for the module students must pass both of the assessment tasks (minimum of 40%).
Brief description of module content and/or aims (maximum 80 words) / This module is for practitioners who wish to develop their clinical cognitive and reflective skills. The theoretical underpinnings and application of the clinical decision making processes and reflections will be explored.
