Website DesignRequirements Exercise

Part 4–Content Analysis & Organization

Summary Outline

When you have a functional navigation menu and appropriate drop-down organization, then the next step is identifying the content necessary for specific pages. This is the phase where you analyze what content you want to keep, delete, modify and create. You can use your current website as a reference, or if you are taking a radical approach (reference requirements exercise #1), this can be the result of a brainstorming/workshop session with your staff. When the content that you want for your site is decided, you should categorize that information into the appropriate drop-down sections and navigation menu heading. All of the content that you want for your website should fit neatly into a corresponding navigation menu, and further subdivided into the drop-down menus (best practices suggest no deeper than three levels). We suggest that once the content is finalized, that you organize the content in summary outline form as shown below within this document. This will also help you detect duplicate content (review after you complete to identify) and if you need to provide links to the same content from different areas of your site navigation you can illustrate it here as well. Kentico lets you re-use the identical content in multiple places and you only have to change it in one location. The structure of the outline should mimic the navigation menuand drop-down menu from the previous requirements exercise. From that structure fill in the summary details of the website pages.

For example:

  1. Home
  2. Undergraduate Studies (Navigation Main Category)
  3. Units – Descriptions of Undergrad. Studiesaffiliates w/ links to their sites
  4. University Studies –Describe degree plan information (w/ an external link to )
  5. Programs & Services – List of descriptions for all services for Undergrad. Studies, photo gallery of events
  6. Forms – Descriptions and links to Undergrad. Studies forms (PDF links for downloads, custom form search feature)
  7. Faculty & Administration(Navigation Main Category)
  8. Academic Advising – Values & Mission of Academic Advising, links to Advising Resources and Advising contact information, list of advising appointments/workshops for the current month
  9. Academic Appeals – How to make an Academic Appeal (describes our Appeals process & contact info), Academic Appeal web form to submit appeals
  10. Academic Coaching – Information on all Academic Consulting and TutoringServices (also includes “Values & Mission of Academic Advising” content from above as well – duplicate content)

Mission & Goals Check #2(optional)

At this point, the summary outline has been created. There should be sufficient content and a strong structure to thoroughly evaluate the design and your previously stated stakeholder mission and goals. Every aspect of your website should fulfill one of these needs. If you find that you are void in content, or have content that does not uphold a stakeholder mission or goal, then you must revise.

Please evaluate your summary outline and decide if it meets stakeholder mission and goals, and make revisions where necessary. Attach your final content summary outline (this document) to an email and send to your project manager.
