Research Report

On a Historical Figure from the Revolutionary Period

We are beginning our study of the Revolutionary War in class. As an extension of our study, you will complete a research report at home. For this report, you will need to choose a famous person that lived during the Revolutionary period, research this person and write a report. Please follow the attached outline for your report. You may neatly write your report or you may type it. If you choose to type it, please have your parents write a letter verifying that you typed it. With supervision from your parents, you can Google, “Important People in the American Revolution” to assist you in choosing your person. You will find many websites that will list important people in the American Revolution.

In addition to the written report, you will also need to complete a creative project about your famous person. Attached is a list of creative project ideas that you can choose from.

Written Report Outline

  1. Cover: A construction paper or a computer generated cover, with a picture of your person, a title, your name, my name and the date.
  1. Paragraph #1: Introduction. This paragraph should state the name of your famous person, when the person was born and died, where the person lived and a brief description of why they are famous.
  1. Paragraph #2: Early Life. This paragraph should focus of your person’s childhood, education and family life.
  1. Paragraphs #3: Contributions. This paragraph should explain what part your person played in the Revolutionary War and what impact his/her actions had on the war. For example, you could include their position, viewpoints, influence on events, contributions, accomplishments, etc.
  1. Paragraph #4: Character Traits. This paragraph should provide two character traits to describe your famous person. Each character trait should be backed and supported using facts and details. For example, if you describe your person as a compassionate person you would need to describe how they are compassionate.
  1. Paragraph #5: Conclusion.This paragraph should conclude your essay. Remember to restate the main idea of this essay.
  1. Bibliography: List at least two sources that you used to acquire the information you used to write your report.
  1. Notes: You also need to hand in your Five Square Graphic Organizer that you made during your research.

** Please make sure you edit your work. You should check for proper spelling, punctuation, grammar, and capitalization.

Creative Project Description

Please choose one of the following creative projects to complete:

  1. Timeline: On 22”x 28” oak tag or poster board, create a timeline of your person’s life. Your timeline should include at least 10 important dates/events in your person’s life. Your timeline should also include pictures of the important events in your person’s life.
  1. Poster: On 22” x 28” oak tag or poster board, design a poster about your person. Your poster should include their name, picture, and ten interesting facts about your person.
  1. PowerPoint Presentation: Create a PowerPoint presentation about your person. Your presentation should be at least 6 slides. Each slide should include facts as well as graphics. You can save it onto a disk or flashdrive and bring it into school. You can download a free trial version of PowerPoint from Microsoft.com. Just be sure you can save your presentation with this trial version before you start. Please get your parents permission before you download the trial version.
  1. Diary: You can make a diary for your person. Your diary would need to contain at least 6 entries and be written in the first person

(Today, I . . .). The entries must pertain to their life and contain factual information as well as antidotal information.

  1. Speech: You can write a speech your famous person might have given when he/she was alive. Be prepared to give your speech to the class as your person. Your speech must be at least three full paragraphs.
  1. Picture Book: Write and illustrate a picture book about your famous person. This book must be the complete story of your person’s life starting with their birth and ending with their death and must be at least 10 pages.
  1. Your Choice: If you would like to design your own creative project - GO FOR IT!!! You need to submit a written description of the creative project you would like to do by February 15, 2018for approval.
