Oliver Twist Script

Ciarán: Welcome to our play ‘Oliver’.

***Scene 1: Kids all walking in singing ‘Food Glorious Food’***

Narrator 1: Since his birth, Oliver Twist had known nothing but hardship and poverty

Narrator 2: Oliver’s mother died when he was young and from that day on Oliver moved regularly from orphanages to workhouses.

Scene 2: Oliver all chatting at the table

Oliver 1: I’m fed up not having enough food.

Oliver 2: Yeah every day I leave here still hungry.

Oliver 3: I just wish we could get a little more food in our tummies to keep us going for all the work we do.

Oliver 4: Right, I’ve got a plan! Let’s draw straws. Whoever draws the longest straw has to go up there and ask for more of this delicious gruel!

Oliver 5: Please Sir, I want some more????

Mr Bumble: What.... You want what???

Oliver 5: It’s just, I’m hungry Sir, I want some more.

MR bumble :what more you say ! never in my life has anyone ever asked for more.

***Kids all singing ‘Oliver , Oliver’ song***

Narrator 1 : from there Oliver was sent to work for a local man , where he was treated even more miserably than in the work house.

***All kids singing ‘Boy for sale’***

Narrator 2: Oliver was so desperate that he decided to run away, all the way to London. It took him seven full days to walk the distance.

Scene 3 Oliver meets pick pockets

Artful Dodger (Cael) : Well hello there, What brings you in to this part of town good sir? Business or pleasure or both?

Oliver (Allie): I’ve been walking for days now, I’m exhausted, Do you have anything to eat?

Artful Dodger (Cael): Do we have anything to eat boys?

Conor Rossiter: Well as it happens we know a very kind old gentleman who will feed you and give you shelter , all for free?

AD (Cael) : That’s right all we do in return is a bit of work but it is more fun and play!

Conor Kelly : Come on consider one of us now and we’ll have lots of fun!

***Children all dance and sing ‘Consider yourself’***

Scene 4: Fagin’s den

Fagin (Cormac): Hello my lovelies, What do we have here?

AD(Jack): Look what we found in need of a bit of shelter and food.

Fagin (Cormac): What’s your name boy... what don’t he speak??

AD(Jack): Of course he speaks, tell him your name!

Oliver (Ellie): Oliver, Oliver Twist sir.

Fagin (Cormac): Oh very polite, I like that. Well we are all delighted to have you here, ain’t that right boys.

All: Yeah that’s right!

Fagin (Cormac): I shall provide you with a place to sleep and food... I hope you like gruel??!!

Oliver (Ellie): Well not really.

Fagin (Cormac): No matter, maybe we have some sausages or something. Anyway what delights have ypu found for me today, my lovelies

(Fagin looks at all the jewels!!)

***All children sing ‘Pick-a-pocket’***

Oliver (Nicole): Fagin, look what I got- this lovely silk scarf. It feels expensive.

Oliver (Nan): And this silver jewellery box and look what’s inside

Oliver (Sophie Q): Look at this lovely leather wallet stuffed with lots of cash!

Oliver (Shonagh): Look what I snatched; this pearl necklace and the biggest diamond ring you’ve ever seen.

Oliver(Mairead): And I got you this beautiful brooch with emeralds- it looks pricey! And guess what else I found- this delicious looking doughnut mmmmm

Narrator 1: In arrives Nancy and Beth to collect Bill Sikes cut from today’s robberies.

Nancy (Amy) : Well hello there everyone. Fagin, Bill sent us over to collect his share of the profits.

Fagin( Charlie): Huh...What share???

Nancy(Amy): Come on Fagin hand it over, the money from last night’s job

Fagin( Charlie): Okay,Okay, here that’s all I can afford to give you.

Beth ( Neala): Now now Fagin, you know Bill will want more than that. He’ll just send us back for more. How do you expect him to live on just one schilling.

Fagin( Charlie): Alright, alright!! Here...

Artful Dodger ( Conor Rossiter): Come on ladies let me escort you in my carriage.

Artful Dodger, Beth, Nancy and Fain sing ‘I’d do anything’

Narrator 2: All the boys and Oliver go to bed, to get ready for a long days work ahead the next day.

Scene 5 Morning at Fagins

Fagin (Niall): Right boys breakfast time

Artful Dodger (Conor Kelly): These sausages are mouldy.

Fagin (Niall): I don’t care, eat them up anyway.

AD ( Conor K): Oliver wants to come out with us and do some pick pocketing.

Fagin (Niall): You want to go out on a job? I’ll be expecting you to bring back lots of goodies for me.

Oliver (Ellie): I’ll try Fagin.

***All children sing ‘Be back Soon’. James says ‘Line up’***

Narrator 1: So Oliver was trained to be a pick pocket like the rest of Fagin’s gang, the Artful Dodger took Oliver out one day to try out his skills outside a bookshop.

Scene 6 Outside the bookstore

Wealthy Man( Jim): Hey... Now give that back... come on hand it over!!

Oliver(Mairead): I didn’t do it. I didn’t do it.

Policeman 1: What’s going on here then?? Did you just take that gentleman’s wallet

Artful Dodger ( Conor K): The boy you are looking for is gone that way.

Policeman 2: Thanks young man. I hope you’re not up to any mischief.

Police siren.... Police chase and catch Oliver

Scene 7: Courthouse

Narrator 1: Unfortunately for Oliver he wasn’t as quick on his feet as the Dodger and he was captured and taken to court.

Judge(Jim): Who is this then??

Policeman 1: He says his name is Oliver Twist.

Policeman 2: We caught him stealing from a gentleman at the market.

Mr Brownlee (Ciarán): Wait!!! I saw it all!! This boy is innocent; it was the other boys who were responsible.

Judge: But sentence has already been passed. Hasn’t it??? Okay okay he can go, who’s going to be responsible for him.

Mr. Brownlee: I will, I’ll take care of him.

Narrator 2: And so Oliver was saved for now by the kind Mr. Brownlee, who took care of Oliver and raised him like a son.

Narrator 1: However, on the other side of London, Fagin and Bill Sikes were plotting a plan to get Oliver back.

Bill Sikes (Bobby): We need him back, he’s the best boy we have to squeeze in windows and doors.

Fagin (Billy): But Bill how will we ever get him back.

Nancy (Julie): Ah leave the child alone, he can finally have a decent life.

Fagin (Billy): But we need him back.

Bill Sikes (Bobby): Nancy you go with Beth and get him back, you hear, bring him back to me.

Beth (Katie): But Bill we don’t want to kidnap him, Can we not just leave him alone? Let him be happy where he is.

Bill Sikes (Bobby): You’ve got to go and get him now. No more talk just go and get him, I said!

Scene 8 Back at Fagins

Narrator 2: Nancy and Beth went to kidnap Oliver while he was out doing messages for Mr.Brownlee, when they got back to Fagin’s den, everyone was delighted to see what he had!

Fagin ( Niall): Run away from us did you, you little toadstool! Come here you.

Nancy(Sophie C); That’s enough Fagin, you’ve got what you wanted, leave him alone.

Fagin(Niall): Show me what you’ve got. Oohh £5 pounds. I’ll bank that for you.

Bill(James): That money is mine. Here keep the books, they’re all yours.

Fagin(Niall): Now, now, we’ve got plans for you young man.

Bill(James): Oliver, you’re coming with me and I’ve got work for you and I need someone small enough to fit in windows.

Oliver( Ellie): No Bill, I want to go back to Mr. Brownlee. He’s really nice and he looks after me.

Bill(James): Come on I need you to do a job for me.

Narrator 1: That night when Bill and Oliver went out on a job, Fagin started to review the situation.

***Fagins all singing ‘Reviewing the Situation’***

Narrator 2: One of the robberies involved that night was at Mr. Brownlee’s house and during the robbery, they woke Mr Brownlee and he came down to investigate what all the noise was about.

Narrator 1: Bill and Oliver run off and try and hide behind Nancy and Beth singing and dancing.

***Children sing ‘OOM pah pah’****

Nancy(Aoibheann): Bill, what did you do?

Bill(James): This little nuisance woke him up before we even got to steal anything.

Nancy(Aoibheann): Oliver come here to me a minute, do you want to go back and live with Mr Brownlee, I think he really wants you to live with him, I can see he loves you dearly.

Oliver(Ellie): oh yes I’d love that.

Beth(Sophie C): Come with us then, Mr.Brownlee is waiting for you on the bridge.

Narrator 2: Nancy and Beth bring Oliver off to London Bridge where they meet Mr. Brownlee who thanks Nancy and Beth for their kindness looking after Oliver. Oliver is now safe and lives happily ever after with Mr. Brownlee.

***Finale: ‘Be back soon’ ***
