Old Capitol Quilters Guild

November 14, 2016

Adele Monserud began the meeting at 7 PM. She thanked the hostesses Judy Stahmer and Connie Smith, and since there were no guests, the meeting moved directly to Heidi Kaisand’s program.

Heidi Kaisand from Hen and Chicks Studio in Conrad, Iowa showcased her family’s quilts and her family history in her program “My Family Jewels.” Heidi is a long-time magazine editor, formerly a national sales manager for long arm machines, and now the owner of a quilt shop. With a slideshow and quilts and the assistance of her two daughters, she showed the group a wide range of quilt styles and fabrics, most sewn (by hand) by her grandmother.

Following the program, committee reports were brief. Adele reminds members that in the case of bad weather, guild meeting cancellations will be announced on area TV and radio stations as well as the guild web site. If the Iowa City Community School District cancels school, the guild meeting is also cancelled. If members are signed up for the newsletter by email, they will get an email about the cancellation. Anyone needing help with email newsletters and notifications can contact Vicki Walsh.

Maureen Kelbe requests that people interested in doing a February 11, 2017 workshop with 4-Hers talk to her. She is looking for ideas – it could involve designing with paper, or sewing. There are 3-50 minute slots available in the 4H mini-workshop.

Historian Laurie Tiffany said that she still has a few photographs left.

The Newsletter Committee reminds members that on November 21, articles are due to Linda Bergquist..

The Membership Committee distributed guild directories.

Nancy Johns of the Service Committee described Fidget Quilts for dementia patients. There was interest from three nursing homes. Each could use about a dozen of these small (18” or 24” square) quilts that have a variety of textures, loops, and things like zippers. They need to be washable. The plan is to collect these donations by March or April. Some guidelines will be posted on the web.

The Service Committee delivered 2 quilts and one bag to DVIP and 5 bags to 4 C’s. They received some thank-you notes from earlier deliveries. There are kits to make up for anyone interested. The Sew-in for February 13, 2017 will be devoted to making kits and quilting. At the Sew-in, lunch is on your own, but a light dessert and coffee will be provided.

The Program Committee described the December 12 Winter Holiday Social. Cookies will be provided. Members who are interested can bring 2 dozen half squared triangles that are 2 ½ inch square (unfinished size). Anyone who brings half squared triangles will leave with 2 dozen mixed and matched. Linda Alberhasky reminded us that the challenge this year involves using 1 (2 ½ inch unfinished size) half squared triangle in a winter themed small quilt.

Mary Ott of the Quilt Show Auction Committee reminded us that donations are being accepted for the Quilt Fest June 2-3, 2017. At the last Quilt Show Auction, baby quilts went quickly, so this is one possibility.
