Minutes of 62nd AGM:

The minutes had been distributed with the Notice of Meeting and were taken as read, approved by the Meeting and signed by the Chairman.

Matters arising:

The Matters Arising section contained a mis-spelling of the Society’s name; it should have read s plus apostrophe rather than apostrophe plus s.

E Blair was elected as President, not Chairman as stated in the Election of Officers section of the minutes.

We had managed to arrange a fixture against the School; Jackie Davies was in charge of golf at the School again and we expected golf would thrive under her leadership.

It had proven impractical to start friendly fixtures earlier due work commitments of many of the participants.

Secretary’s Report:

This Report on the Society’s activities in 2005 had been circulated with the Notice of Meeting. The Captain, Jo Smith, was thanked for his hard work and success during the year.

It was noted that many of our guest trophies had been won by Upminster members.

The Meeting congratulated the members of our EPSGS Scratch Foursomes winning team.

The Matchplay Knockout Final was to be played on Friday 11 November.

Treasurer’s Report:

The Treasurer distributed copies of the accounts for the year to 31st October 2005 to those present.

The entry fee for the Supper Quiz should be raised to at least £10.

The Secretary had not added the agreed £1 levy to meetings after the Yuletide and he should do so in the 2006 season.

Trophy insurance was proving to be expensive and we are going to have an additional expense insuring the EPSGS Matthews Trophy. The Secretary was asked to find out from George Kingston (Old Brentwoods) whether the Trophy could be held at ThorndonPark all the time. R Wolstenholme would find out insurance costs from Woodford GC’s broker. The Meeting agreed that we should continue to insure all trophies.

We should gather details of all trophies and their engravings, so that we may replace them in the event of loss.

It was noted that participating in the EPSGS Foursomes is a considerable expense.

We unfortunately forfeited the entry fees for the Grafton Morrish qualifying due to our late withdrawal from the event.

It was agreed to raise the subs to £15 and also to setup collection by Standing Order; Frank Davis would setup the SO instructions.

We had not won any Premium Bond prizes, but the Bonds should be kept a while longer.

The Secretary should send meeting details out by email as far as possible to reduce postage costs.

The accounts were approved by the Meeting (F Davis proposed; R Wolstenholme seconded)

Election of Officers:

E Blair remains as President for another 4 years

A Kodish thanked J Smith for his efforts as Captain.

A Beer was proposed as Captain by J Smith, seconded by R Davies and unanimously approved by the Meeting. Andy thanked the Meeting for their support and said he hoped to maintain the high standing of the Society created by his predecessors.

R Wolstenholme agreed to be elected as Vice-Captain.

A Kodish agreed to continue as Secretary and R Davies as Treasurer.

F Davis agreed to continue as Team Secretary.

J Hull (in absentia) agreed to continue as Scratch Secretary

The Committee continued to be composed of DRiddle, F Davis and RWolstenholme

2005/06 Fixtures:

The Secretary announced the firm fixture dates. The Captain’s meeting is to be held at The Hertfordshire in mid June.

A number of venues were suggested for the Spring Meeting and the Secretary was asked to arrange this.

The Meeting was generally in favour of returning to France for the Autumn Meeting, although some members viewed the courses as being too difficult for high handicappers. The Secretary would solicit expressions of interest for France in the Yuletide mailshot.

Any other business:

The Meeting agreed to introduce an Associate Membership category, aimed at our numerous frequently attending guests. This would cost £15 per annum and would not carry voting rights or tie buying privileges. The Committee would decide which members-only meetings could be attended by Associates.

The handicap allowance in the Matchplay Knockout was discussed. It was proposed to lower this to ¾ of the difference, but the Meeting voted 8-2-1 to retain a full handicap difference.

The Society should try to have some representation at OBA events, in order to attract new (younger) members.

After a vote of thanks to the Chairman, the Meeting closed at 22:13 pm.

SECRETARY’S REPORT FOR 2006

We have enjoyed a very successful year under the Captaincy of Andy Beer, during which the highlights have included another very enjoyable Autumn Meeting in France. We played six matches against other Essex Societiesand the Woodford GC Veterans, losing two, winning two and halving two. Notably, we managed to break Chigwell’s unbeaten record. The trophy winners this year are as follows:

Meeting / Trophy / Name
Yuletide at Theydon Bois / Michael Steward Trophy / Roy Holloway
Spring at Abridge / Goddard Trophy / Steve Sonnis
Spring at Abridge / Harman Trophy / John Skinner
Captain’s at Hertfordshire / Arnold Cup & Captain’s Prize / Peter Gillett
Autumn at Le Touquet La Mer / Woodford Bowl / Frank Davis
Autumn at Le Touquet La Mer / Autumn Quaiche / Ian Jones
Autumn at Hardelot Les Pins / L.P.Parker Tankards / Ian Jones & Dave Baker
Autumn at Hardelot Les Pins / Jubilee Tankard / Roger Walmsley
Matchplay Knockout / 1920 Cup / D Riddle v E Blair / P Fowles

Essex Public Schools’ Meetings

The scheduled Spring Meeting at Chigwell was cancelled due to lack of interest, although we had entered plenty of players. Unfortunately, we failed to defend our Scratch Foursomes title at ThorndonPark as we were only able to field an incomplete team.Nevertheless, I would like to thank James Hull for arranging this and the Grafton Morrish teams.

Grafton Morrish Scratch Foursomes

We were able to field a team for the qualifying round at KnolePark this year, finishing 13th out of 18 teams and 5 points short of qualifying.

Autumn Meeting

We had a good turnout for this threeday meeting, with 10 members and 14 guests attending. Once again, we stayed at Le Westminster in Le Touquet. We dined out in a local restaurant on the first evening and enjoyed an excellent evening in the hotel on the second night. We played the two Le Touquet courses and Hardelot Pines. Le Touquet La Mer was as challenging as usual, although it was not as windy as we have experienced. The match between the President’s and Secretary’s teams on the first afternoon was rather one sided, with the President’s team winning 6-0.

Thanks to…

My thanks go to our Team Secretary, Frank Davis for his sterling efforts in raising teams for the matches.I would also like to thank Roy Davies for his work as Treasurer and to Andy Beer for the considerable effort he put into being Captain.

Finally I would like to thank all members for their continued support during the year, particularly in turning out for the matches, and also for helping in various ways at our meetings.
