The Institut Ramon Llull presents

Ojos de Brujo at the Guadalajara International Book Fair

Who: Ojos de Brujo

Where: Guadalajara, Explanada, Expo Guadalajara

When: 4 December, 09:00 p.m.

What: “Hip-hop/flamenco fusion” would perhaps be the best label for this group of musicians from different origins who came together in the multicultural old quarter of Barcelona, their natural habitat. They began their recording career with Vengue (Edel, 2000), an innovative disc combining elements of flamenco, hip-hop and funk. A couple of years later, with the experience they had gained on their extensive international tours, they issued Barí on their own label, La Fábrica de Colores. It was precisely this work that brought Ojos de Brujo international recognition for their rich musical offerings. They have taken part in international festivals such as Popkomm, Womex and Womad and they have received a BBC prize for the best European world music group.

In Guadalajara, Ojos de Brujo will be playing material from Barí as well as later remixes of their own work published on Las remezclas de la casa (La Fábrica de Colores, 2004). In the hands of this group of over a dozen musicians, the audience can expect a spectacle in which rumba rhythms and percussion dialogue with the vocal modulations of flamenco on an underlying electric base. Musical traditions that seem so far apart, yet are miraculously complementary.

This trip is in fact their second visit to Mexico, since in 2002 they took part in the Radical Mestizo concert arranged as part of the Festival Centro Histórico del DF.
