Executive Director Position Description

Position Summary

Ohio Interfaith Power and Light (OhIPL) is the Ohio affiliate ofThe Regeneration Project'snational Interfaith Power and Light campaign. Established in late 2007 as a non-profit project of the Ohio Council of Churches, our mission is to empower a religious response to climate change and to promote energy conservation, energy efficiency, and renewable energy. We focus on tangible results in religious communities - putting our faith into action – through energy conservation and renewable energy programs.

The executive director is responsible for leading, growing and managing OhIPL, under the direction of the Board of Directors, Advisory Board and Coordinating Council. The executive director is expected to lead OhIPL to greater financial stability, grow the organization and achieve expanded results that support our mission.

Responsibilities

Mission Development

  • Speak and teach in local faith communities, clergy gatherings and interfaith groups about care of creation, climate change, global warming and the need for energy efficiency and renewable energy sources.
  • Develop, in coordination with the Board of Directors, Advisory Board and national Interfaith Power and Light, various programs and initiatives to further the mission of OhIPL.
  • Develop and implement a two year strategic plan to ensure that the programs and activities of OhIPL are consistent with the organizational mission.
  • Facilitate the planning, promotion and execution of the annual OhIPL conference.

Public Presence

  • Develop and implement OhIPL’s public policy and legislative agenda
  • Represent OhIPL to the public in ways that will encourage faith communities to become OhIPL members, such as personal witness, prayer breakfasts, speeches, slide shows, podcasts, panel discussions, regional workshops, etc.
  • Interact with faith communities, clergy, other groups and public officials to further the OhIPL legislative agenda
  • Ensure a regular presence in mainstream and religious media for OhIPL; serve as OhIPL’s primary spokesperson; approve all organizational materials.
  • Supervise the maintenance of the OhIPL website.

Financial and Organizational Development

  • Develop and implement organizational fund raising
  • Assure the maintenance of financial records, submit monthly financial reports to the Board of Directors and coordinate the annual audit
  • Hire and supervise all consultants and staff members; maintain records and manage the office
  • Oversee the recruitment of volunteers to support and participate in OhIPL programs and activities
  • Help establish, develop and grow the Board of Directors. Recruit new religious leaders to the movement. Build rapport with the new Advisory Board.
  • Foster communication linkages with the Coordinating Council, Board of Directors, Advisory Board, membership, officials, Ohio Council of Churches, Ohio judicatories and the national Interfaith Power and Light organization
  • Serve and support all OhIPL committees as needed

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of and passion for environmental issues, particularly global warming and energy issues, and an understanding of the connection between the natural world and religious life. A person who walks the talk.
  • At least five years active involvement in a religious community; religious leadership experience preferred
  • Executive level experience at a non-profit organization or similar entity, focused on leadership and collaboration
  • Grant writing, fund raising, and administrative skills; fiscal management including budget development
  • Excellent communication skills – a good public speaker and strong writer
  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel and Word and online databases; website design skills a plus
  • B.A. or B.S. required
  • M. of Divinity, ordained clergy from all faith backgrounds, or MBA preferred
