LIBRARY MEDIA ASSISTANT

The Santa Maria-Bonita School District is currently accepting applications. Applicants may fill out one application to apply for both positions. TO APPLY: Submit an application form together with:

·  High School Diploma or equivalent (mandatory)

·  Typing Certificate showing 35 wpm net corrected speed. (mandatory)

·  Resume (optional)

·  Letters of recommendation (optional)

SALARY: $14.63 per hour to start

HOURS: 3-3.75 hours per day depending upon the site assignment

WORK YEAR: 180 days (August through June)

DUTIES: Perform library clerical, circulation, and cataloging functions for the school library. Refer to the attached job description for complete information.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Any combination equivalent to: Graduation from High School supplemented by training or coursework in library clerical or general clerical areas and six months of clerical experience, preferably including some experience in a library or instructional materials center.

CERTIFICATES REQUIRED:

Ø  A TYPING CERTIFICATE showing a minimum net corrected speed of 35 words per minute is required. The certificate must have been issued within the past six months. The typing certificate must show that the test was a five-minute test with no more than five errors. Example: 65 wpm with 4 errors = 61 wpm net corrected speed. A valid typing certificate must be attached to the application packet before the application can be considered complete. Original certificate can not be returned to you. A copy of the certificate is acceptable, however ,if hired, you will may be required to produce the original certificate for your file.

Ø VERIFICATION OF YOUR LEVEL OF EDUCATION. Provide verification of your highest level of education Attach a copy of your High School Diploma; Equivalency Certificate; College Transcript or Diploma showing the level of degree obtained. If hired, you may be required to show the original certificate to Human Resources for verification.

SELECTION PROCESS:

1.  The applications are reviewed to determine those candidates who meet position qualifications.

2.  Those candidates who meet position qualifications will be invited to test.

3. Those qualified applicants who have a test score of 70% or above are placed on an eligibility list for interview.

Applicants should be aware that the Santa Maria-Bonita School District has an agency shop and that should you be employed you will be required to join the California School Employees Association, which is the bargaining unit for classified employees. LIBRARY MEDIA ASSISTANT

BASIC FUNCTION

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, perform clerical functions related to the storage, circulation and recovery of library and reference books and instructional materials and media.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

Receive and shelve books, periodicals, instructional materials and mediaE; maintain circulation and distribution recordsE; prepare and maintain file and record systems, including shelf and storage lists and catalog cardsE; assist in collecting and circulating books, periodicals, and instructional mediaE; operate a computer and input various information and generate records or listsE; lift, carry, arrange, shelve, box and package books and instructional materialsE; maintain a neat and orderly library media center environmentE; repair and mend damaged books and other instructional material as requiredE; maintain related recordsE; type catalog cards, book lists, bibliographies, memoranda, and related materialsE; collect money for fines and maintain simple cash receipts records as requiredE; assist in locating materials for classroom use; assist students in locating materials pertaining to specific subject matter areas as required; assist in monitoring student behavior; provide direction and assistance to student library assistants and parent volunteers as required; assist in the preparation of requisitions for books and instructional materials as required; assist in the library inventory process; perform related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

Modern office methods, practices, and equipment;

Correct English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation;

Basic arithmetical concepts;

Student behavior management strategies and techniques;

Standard library reference sources, books, and other library related materials.

Ability to:

Perform library clerical functions, including circulation, recovery and book repair functions;

Maintain record and filing systems pertaining to a library media center;

Utilize standard reference resource guides;

Type at a net corrected speed of 35 words per minute;

Communicate effectively both orally and in writing;

Understand and follow oral and written directions;

Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others.

Seeing to read various materials and to monitor student behavior;

Lifting light to moderately heavy objects;

Reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally;

Kneeling or crouching.
