REPORT OF HEAD OF SCHOOL ADVICE AND SUPPORT SERVICES

OFSTED AREA WIDE INSPECTION OF BOURNEMOUTH AND POOLE – POST INSPECTION ACTION PLAN FOR 14-19 LEARNING

  1. PURPOSE

To present to Members the post-inspection action plan resulting from the OfSTED Area Wide Inspection of Bournemouth and Poole’s Learning provision for students aged 14 to 19 years, undertaken in November 2004.

  1. DECISION REQUIRED

That the Committee receive the action plan, and note that a progress report will be submitted to Members in January 2007.

  1. BACKGROUND

3.1At its meeting on 26 April 2005 the Committee received a report on the outcome of the 14-19 Area Wide Inspection for Bournemouth and Poole undertaken in November 2004. It was a joint inspection by the Officer for Standards in Education (OfSTED) and the Adult Learning Inspectorate (ALI).

3.2The post-inspection action plan (Appendix B) was written by the Learning and Skills Council (LSC), Poole and Bournemouth Local Education Authorities and Connexions. A letter from the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) approving the plan is appended (Appendix A).

3.3Members’ attention is drawn to pages 19-34 of the plan as these address school related issues, including accommodation and employability.

3.4The plan will be funded by the LSC. £706,000 has been allocated for 2005-2006, to be committed by March 2006. The greater part of this (£500,000-£600,000) is likely to resource a new Skills Centre for the area.

3.5Funding has been allocated for Poole schools for 2005-2006: £61,000 for catering at Carter Community Sports College and a sum, (to be confirmed) for technology at Rossmore Community College.

3.6Targets and activities within the plan will be reviewed and updated annually, or as appropriate, to ensure they are both realistic and challenging. Progress reports will be submitted to the DfES and LSC three times a year; two short reports in May and September, and an annual report in January. It is proposed that the annual report be submitted to Members of the Community Support and Education Scrutiny Committee.
