Dear Students and Parents,

Welcome back! We hope everyone enjoyed a wonderful break. As we enter the new semester, we want to make you aware of the rules, procedures and expectations of Physical Education class.

Physical Education is a required course according to the Texas Education Agency. There are Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) set and followed for this course.

A senate bill was passed in regards to physical education, Senate Bill 891. This bill requires the physical education curriculum to be sequential, developmentally appropriate, designed, implemented, and evaluated to enable students to develop the motor, self management, and other skills, knowledge, attitudes, and confidence necessary to participate in physical activity throughout life. It also requires that, on a weekly basis, at least 50 percent of the physical education class be used for actual student physical activity that is to the extent practicable, at a moderate or vigorous level.

Dressing Out

All students are required to dress out every day. Even if the student is unable to physically participate with a validated excuse, they will still be required to dress out. The student will be required to purchase an MHS PE Uniform consisting of a t-shirt and shorts. In addition, they will need to wear tying athletic tennis shoes. The student must be fully dressed out; students will not receive partial credit for being partially dressed out.

PE Uniforms:

· Available for purchase through MySchoolBucks.com. (Instructions attached)

· Available for purchase by cash/check (Made out to MHS PE Dept.) and given to PE

teacher

· $20 for complete Uniform ($10 for shirt/$10 for shorts)

· Items will be available for rental if a student has forgotten or misplaced their uniform

.50 ea. for shirt or shorts per day. (Cash only)

· Students may purchase a replacement, at full price, in the event an item is lost.

Consequences:

· After the 3rd time a student does not dress out in a 6 week grading period, the parent will be contacted.

· After the 4th time a student does not dress out in a 6 week grading period they will be referred to their assistant principal.

Locker Room Procedures

Students will be allowed five minutes after the tardy bell to dress for class. At the end of class, students will be allowed five to ten minutes to redress. Students are responsible for his/her own belongings. Lockers will be provided for each student. If a student’s belongings do not fit in the issued PE locker, they will be left out and will not be protected from theft. It is encouraged that they leave unneeded items at home. It is strongly encouraged that the student takes his/her clothes home at least once per week for laundering. School appropriate behavior is expected in the locker room. No food or drinks will be allowed in the locker room and will be confiscated. Locker Rooms must be kept clean. The Zero Tolerance Policy is in effect.

ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY

This policy entails that if any student: pushes, hits, shoves, punches, etc…another student, disciplinary action will be taken. This includes horseplay, inappropriate language and comments of disrespect, etc. All students are aware of this rule and it will take effect immediately.

Temporary Excuses/Tardies

A student who is injured or ill may bring a parent/guardian written and signed note, which will be accepted for a maximum of three school days. The note must include the date, reason for excuse, the days excused, a signature and phone number. After three days, the students must present a doctor's note. Student will still be required to dress out even if they are not able to participate.

Students who are tardy to class must still be able to dress out within the allocated five minutes. If he/she is unable to do so, the student will not receive credit for dressing out for the day.
