This course will introduce students to the fundamentals of operating an offset press, knowledge of papers, and cutting and binding operations.

Standard 1: Demonstrate knowledge of offset press fundamentals. (1841.S.1)

Offset Press Objectives

Students will:

1841.1.1Explain the principle behind offset printing.

1841.1.2Identify the basic systems of a sheet-fed press.

1841.1.3Determine pH of fountain solution and properly mix fountain solution.

1841.1.4List basic press operation and wash-up procedures.

Components of Offset Press Objectives

Students will:

1841.2.2Identify components of the inking system, dampening system, feeder system, register board, and delivery system.

Operate Offset Press Objectives

Students will:

1841.3.1Read production information on job ticket.

1841.3.2Describe and perform proper safety precautions during press operations.

1841.3.3Prepare fountain concentrate and dampening system.

1841.3.4Select color of ink and prepare the inking system.

1841.3.5Install offset plate.

1841.3.6Setup feeder system.

1841.3.7Select proper paper size and weight.

1841.3.8Prepare register board and paper delivery system.

1841.3.9Print a single color job.

1841.3.10Print a job on NCR stock.

1841.3.11Print a multicolor job.

Paper-cutting Operations Objectives

Students will:

1841.5.1Read production information on job ticket.

1841.5.2Calculate number of cuts from stock, identifying combination cuts.

1841.5.3Describe and perform proper safety precautions during paper cutting operations.

Bindery Operations Objectives

Students will:

1841.6.1List operations performed in the bindery areas.

1841.6.2Name two (2) types of stitches.

1841.6.3Pad # 20 paper stock and carbonless paper stock.
